I'm doing the 46 km one. First time. Seems like a fair amount of climbing mid race. Last part more 'tolerable' - puff puff!

There in a silver D3 V8 from the 'Bosch.

    Default Fine Breede MTB

So today's MTB over the 46 km course tapped deep into my reserves being fairly hot and virtually no wind on the climbs to get some heat transfer (cooling) going! The first 3 long climbs took some deep digging with the last steep one up to Waaihoek neck that came as a nasty surprise (my first outing on this course) just when one thought the hard work has been done.

Saw a guy collapsing just over Waaihoek neck (luckily attended by fellow riders). I found the route containing something of everything and certainly quite entertaining - never to stop concentrating on the faster and downhill sections with camber, loose gravel/stones, dips, and lots of potentially race-ending stones and rocks! The sandy patches were as always....very unwelcome!.

A well organised and enjoyable event!

Any feedback from those who also took part today?

Carel, I didn't see your Discovery, but I did spot a white Hilux with a CL number and a forum sticker.

It was a tough 46km and the heat made it a lot tougher. Not really my type of route but a good ride and the organising was superb.

Wow what a tough tough race indeed.

The heat def made it 10x worse than it already was. The first half of the race was just climbing and that broke quite a lot of peeps. Then the downhills/singletracks was quite technical and needed full concentration otherwise you would come short.

The last long climb of the 46k race was def a killer coz it was never-ending and the sun sapping all your juices out of you. I walked quite a few times on that climb along with the majority of the guys.

I must say tho that the race was very well marshaled and planned and the water points were really good. Choc's, sweeties, water, coke, bananas and powerade at all the stops.

I would suggest tho that the race be started a hour earlier at bare minimum coz 8h30 start was way to late and hot by that time.

Will I do it again? Not in 35 - 40deg heat.

    Default Willow Creek event

I did the 60 km mtb race at Willow Creek on Yesterday (03/04/2014) for the first time. Quite tough as most of them are. Luckily the weather played out nicely and it was not too hot after starting at 08h30. Apart from being out in Karoo-type scenery the flat, hard and wide gravel roads in-between the jeep tracks were a blessing to catch ones breath and rest the upper body somewhat.
Then came that diabolical last climb up to the MTN tower before the relieving last ten km's mostly downhill back to the start/finish. It is one of those climbs where almost everybody had to walk several times!
The route had lots of rough jeep track with some deceptive "erdvark-gate" and sections with severe water erosion. One had to get your line just right to stay upright with the occasional sandy patches lurking in the shade following some fast cornering sections!
All in all a lekker race!

Entered for the Tru Cape MTB event in Grabouw this coming weekend. Any news from you guys?

    Regards.

    Carel.

I did the willow creek race few years ago but it was too muchgravel roads to my liking.

Trucape is something very different. It is a seriously tough 50km, much more technical compared to other similar events and quite a bit of climbing. Take it easy and pick up the pace later if you have some left in the tank. And the start is always interesting! I would have been there but have another commitment already.
