    Default Cheap GPS

I have SE P990i - Apparently the phone is GPS capable with the addition of a BT GPS receiver.

Does anyone have this phone and use it as a GPS?
What does a BT receiver cost? Worthwhile buying that or rather use the money towards a "proper" GPS?

The other option I am looking at is a GPS imported from China (Yes, I know most things are made in China anyway). A friend is looking at the import of various electronic items from there.

Thus far I have only seen samples of solar mobile chargers (pretty nifty things) and if the quality of these is anything to go by then I reckon the stuff from there is not too bad.

Most of the GPS units have Samsung CPUs and the range of models cover a wide variety of features.

Has anyone here even seen or used these "Chinese GPS" units? Would you trust one?

    A GPS is a GPS is a GPS ...

(You can buy a GPS CPU for a few $)

A GPS is like a PC - without the software, it is as valuable as a blow-up dart board.

The difference between different GPSs lies in
    • the maps you can use with it
    • track logs
    • POIs
    • route logs
    • auto routing
    • voice prompts
    • etc
The standard to compare others with, is still the Garmin GPSs.

If you want to use it in major cities only, there are many options, but if you want to use it off-road ....

I haven't seen anything threatening the Garmin/Garmap team, yet.

So as regards the P990i cellphone, does anyone know:
    • What maps you can use with it?
    • What software it supports
    • If it supports track logs,POIs, route logs?
Does anyone use a BT GPS receiver? Which ones are good to get?

The SE 990i runs on Symbian 90 if I’m correct therefore you could use Wild-Mobile.com software. I used the MapView version (free) for a couple of years or you could buy the upgraded SmartCom version. You convert OziExplorer files to run on MapView…

Use a Bluetooth GPS receiver. (FalcomNavi-XT or Navi-B)

Scroll to “Nokia 6110 Navigatorin the topic list.

Where did you buy the Holux? How much does it cost?

Apparently you can buy them off ebay for like R500 but I'd prefer just walking into a shop and buying it if it's not too much more locally.

Does the Hollux have a socket for external GPS antenna?

Comparing it to the Falcom Navi-XT at over a R1000 and discontinued, the Hollux is a good deal and new technology!

I am currently using an Garmin Mobile 10 Bluetooth GPS receiver with my HP PDA and am very hapy with it. Around 20 hours of battery life, works well under tree canopy and offers voice prompts if your PDA/phone supports it. Also supports Garmap. Cost around R1100,00 without the Garmap maps and around R2200,00 with them.

Works very well with "Cybertracker" data logging software.
