Glad I found this post. I have a Stanley that was given to me in 1998 (new)
It is one of the made in USA models. I have hardly used it but recall that when I did last, many years ago, it didn't hold its heat.
Last night I thought I would give it a go. I pre warmed it with some water and then filled it with boiling water. Within minutes, the out casing was almost too hot to touch which implies that the hot water is getting into the 'cavity wall'.
This morning (10 hours later) the water was stone cold.
Best I get over to ODW and see if they will exchange.
Cars and bikes to get dirty.

Stanley have recently included 3 temperature related figures on their branding:

    • Hot
    • Cold
    • Iced

    HOT
Taking care too not over tighten the stopper, but ensure good fit will extend the warmth to the claimed 24 hours. This also includes keeping the bottle in a warm environment. Stanley further explain that once boiling water is poured into a flasks it has already cooled down to 95°C. Stanley stop measuring at 60°C. Anything colder is not viewed as hot water by Stanley.

    COLD
The temperature span for cold water is a much narrower margin, cold starts at 5°C and they consider water to no longer be cold once it was warmed up to 9°C.

    ICED
Stanley have recently introduced a new temperature classification called Iced. A flask is packed ¾ with ice then filled with water. The flask’s temperature is measures until the starting ''cold'' temperature is reached, namely 5°C.

Please contact Eiger Equipment in Cape Town on 021 555 0363 or PM myself with any queries about Stanley items.

    Regards

I'm impressed with my Stanley flask. Even though I tested and found it A okay but had some questions. Barrelman (Greg) still offered to examine it and replace if found defective.

    Great service.

I did the same test on a cheap Checkers 1.8l bottle and the temperatures dropped by 26 degrees C over a 24 hour period.
I have had a 1.9l Stanley for 26 years, the bottom is now rusted and it looses heat faster than normal, no measure just know from previous use that this is failing. I took the flask to Outdoor Warehouse and have been told that a +- 6 week wait for a test is required with a payment of R 150 for transport and then maybe they will exchange it. I have another smaller stanley 30 years old and still works well. looks like excahnge is not immediate but lets see will update this thread.

My probably 3 year old Stanley stopper has perished off at the bottom of the where the silicon O-ring meets inside the flask. Meaning if you tip flask, water comes out. ODW says they are waiting for stoppers to arrive from USA, hoping end of September.

If you are based in Cape Town it is a very simple process to exchange, you walk into their offices (Stanley agents) they swap the item within 5 minutes, no questions asked.

… it helps to “pre-warm” the flask by flushing it with 1/2 a cup of boiling water before adding the hot water and its important to keep the ‘cup’ on the flask as most heat seems to be lost through the top IMO

According to ODW in East London there is a shortage of Stanley flask stoppers in the country, hence the long wait.,
