Default xtrail Catalyst Converter ??? Help

My x trail was making a terrible sound so I took it in to have it checked out. Apparently the problem is the catalyst converter. Nissan want to charge in the region of R10 000,00 for a new one. I have been told that you can just have the converter removed, will this damage the vehicle in any way?

Pls help if you have any knowledge on this!

    Thanks

Just basic idea of a Cat converter, it contains Platinum for one, it converts the harmfull gasses that comes out of the engine to cleaner particles. If it is there or not, it won't damage the car, but will damage the environment. But plus for you, the car will perform quite a bit better if it is out.
