Smile Hello Defenders of the Western Cape!

And all other 4X4rs of course...

I have just closed the deal on my first ever Land Rover and more to the point 1st ever 4X4! I hope to pick her up Monday or Tuesday next week!!! To say I'm excited is the understatement of the century!

A quick history snippet: I grew up in the mountains of Wales (yes the home of Rugby. Nobody mention the last world cup... BRICE!) there were loads of farms and as may Defenders. I loved them and got a little toy one from mum and dad when I was about 8, bright yellow with red wheels. I loved that little car and promised one day to own one. That day has arrived nearly 30 years later

I got myself a LR 90, 2.8i, (bring the fuel consumption jokes on, I can take it) 50 yr anniversary model, 197k on the clock, bright red and in really good shape!

So some questions Defenders of the Western Cape:

OBVIOUSLY I have started looking at what I can now ad to it...
    1)
Where will be a good place to look for well priced parts like, roof racks, bull bars, ladders?
    2)
I would like to fit a stereo, there is no central dash housing (I don't know what they are called) for one but all the wiring is there. Where can I find the proper housing?
    3)
Where is the best place to get it serviced in Cape Town?
    4)
Can anybody suggest a nice little introduction route for me to take her out on her maiden voyage. I'm not talking full on 4X$ trail just a little spin off road to get used to my new lady.

Look out for a very excited small Welshman in his new bright red Defender and flash if you see me.

    Thanks all and HELLO!

    Jim

Hi Jim, congrats. Where in Cape Town are you?

For servicing I would consider Jakes (his forum name is DiscoMad) in Montague Gardens he is very experienced in Land Rovers. For engine specific repairs (in case something like the VANOS breaks, not saying it will) I would go to Anton @ APS in Stikland, he has got a lot of experience with those motors.

    Happy wheeling.

Congrats & enjoy. Is your spare the same size as the other tyres? It's a different brand.

    Hi XJ Junkie,

And thanks I will be enjoying in a couple of hours. I woke up early too excited to sleep. I'm like a little boy with a new toy. No I am a boy with a new toy :-)

No it's not :-( the tyres on are over sized. The previous owner put terrafirma wheel spacers on so he could put bigger tyres.

I would be glad on any advice about that... Do they make a difference? Pros and cons?

    Cheers!

If you pick up a puncture then you won't be able to use that spare in 4wd with the CDL engaged. It will create driveline wind up which could cause your transfer case to pop.

All you need to do is make sure all your tyres are the same size.

Friday Avie Club does every Friday at 13:30, but the dunes are open any time if you can get someone willing to show you round.
DO NOT go alone. This applies to anywhere offroad.

What size are your tyres? Your spare might be the same diameter even though it is narrower. Glad the only BFG you have is on the back door. Best place for it

    Hi Jackbuilt,

    Welcome to the family

I saw this bullbar in the forum's classifieds. Don't know if it's still available. Looks like a good price, but you'll have to have it powder coated. http://www.4x4community.co.za/classi...-bullbar/cat/5
