I bought this pristine model build at Cars in the Park in Bloem on 1 May. Apparently this kit dates back to the '60's and in the meantime nobody seemed interested in building it. It soon became apparent why; some parts are as small as a pinhead, some can't possibly fit (especially the smaller pieces of the complicated steering system) and others broke easily (wipers, window cranks and trim pieces). Good glue is important!

Still was a lot of fun! I had some bronze paint left over from painting a wooden hoepoe and decided to brush paint the Cord's body with it. The bronze suit the car well but my execution looks like crap, it needs at least two more coats.

Okay, so these are 1:24, but I could not help myself when walking past these in Makro. They are part of Motormax's Forgotten Classics series that includes the Chevy Vega, Ford Pinto and Ford Maverick. These two are the 1971 Mercury Comet (just a rebadged Maverick) and 1974 AMC Gremlin. The Comet was a half-decent car for it's time, this particular one 'fitted' with the lowly 200 CID (3.3l) inline six and the interior casting suggests a four-on-the-floor manual. One could get a Boss version with the 302 (4.9l) V8, basically a budget Mustang; this is also available in the Motormax series but being a Hub Nutter (see YouTube) I like focusing on the base models.

Much more quirky and dorky is the AMC Gremlin, this one a Gremlin X with straight-six (232 or 258 CID, or 3.8 and 4.2 litres) and three-on-the-tree auto (the same engines used in the CJ Jeeps built locally by Volkswagen in the '70's). Yes, the Gremlin is a Hornet with the boot - sorry, trunk - cut off. AMC design chief Dick Teague sketched the original idea on an air sickness bag during a flight. They turned out to be good cars in terms of eliability, performance, comfort and NVH. Engine options were a 2.0 i4 from VW/Audi; 3.3, 3.8 and 4.2 AMC i6's and a 5.0 AMC V8, the latter known as a 'Corvette killer' in its day. Some geeky info on a wintery Tueday!
