    Default Shipping car to Mombasa

    Hi Guys
We are planning to ship our vehicles to Kenia, do a safari in Kenia and then drive back to Cape Town. Do you have any advice on shipping the vehicles. Whom to contact, what to be careful about etc.

    Thanks

Watching this post very carefully .....
We are wanting to do the reverse in mid January next year - we are driving up from Cape Town to Malindi in Kenya and flying out back to Cape Town on the 13th of Jan and are looking to ship back to Cape Town from Mombassa.

    Suggestions appreciated.

    UPDATE:
I have chatted with Franco and Berry & Donaldson in Cape Town who have given me all the details of what to do / arrange etc - the long and short is that we meet their local agent in Nairobi ( our end point ), load and secure the vehices and trailers in the containers, and off they go by road to Mombasa and then ship to Cape Town ....

    (relief)

Now all I am waiting for is the price ....

I wonder what makes it so expensive?
A 20' container should be around R13,500 for shipping from Mombasa to Durban. a 40' around R26,500. (Not sure about CT)
Is there a lot of clearing and inspections to be done?
What part of the quote is the road freight?

Fly up and hire a couple 4x4s. However, be sure they put together an itinerary, including arranging campsites in the parks for you.

Actual freight and port charges is R 28 500 per container; R 8 500 from Nairobi to Mombassa and the rest is clearing etc charges back here.

I've been starting to look into the same thing, just to save travel time. We've just done a 3 1/2 week road trip to Tanzania and back to JHB with the kids [awesome!], but we're really keen on North Tanzania, Kenya, and Ethiopia - and driving that far north will just take too long.

The cost of hiring a 4x4 in Kenya or Tanzania isn't cheap, and there are apparently also restrictions in each country for vehicles with the other countries number plates [i.e. no access to Tz parks if you have Kenyan plates and visa versa].

So, we thought, what about shipping the cars to Mombasa and then doing a 3 / 4 week round trip from there and shipping the vehicles back. Flights to and From Mombasa are easy form JHB, and we could simply drive the cars to and from Durban on either end.

I've approached the following companies who charge around £750 to ship from the UK to Mombasa [roll-on / roll-off (RORO), not containers]. I have no idea what additional costs there may be. Let's see. Hopefully the relatively short stretch Durban > Mombasa will be even less.

    http://rocklanefreight.com/notificat...hipping-dates/
    http://www.russellsfreight.com/car-s...-mombasa-kenya
    http://www.ascopeshipping.co.uk/

They all deliver to Durban so I'm hoping they'll be able to pick up in Durban and drop in Mombasa.

    RORO vs Containers:
If you want to camp and want all your camping gear / trailer to be shipped securely, then you need a container.
However, if you won't be camping [we do low cost backpackers, bungalows etc], but want the freedom of self driving and 4x4, then you can ship RORO [with almost nothing in the vehicle and buy your supplies and incidentals in Mombasa.

I'll post back here as soon as I hear anything from the companies I've contacted!

Even with very little in the vehicle I would worry about RORO and whether I would have a complete vehicle to collect.

Thanks Eric, I was too busy to check.

Spedition Quirx was EUR 3200,- in 2010 from Frankfurt to CT.
They might be on 3500 nowadays. The container market is very tight.
