Default Hwange - Driving through the park (and the rest of our overland)

    Hi all,

We're planning a trip for the end of November. My cousin will be over from the UK and given we have some family in Zim we've decided to do a trip into Zim. Also, you can't come to Africa and not see Vic Falls.

The plan is to go Joburg to Bulawayo (probably through Botswana - advice welcomed), where we will take a day trip out to Great Zimbabwe Ruins. We will then head up to Vic Falls on the Main Road for a few days. Then we want to go from the Northern end of Hwange National Park to the Southern side to stay at Ivory Lodge or Safari Lodge (undecided). We'll stay there a few nights before heading back to Bulawayo and then JHB.

Where do we enter Hwange in the north? Any general advice for driving through Hwange? Is the road fairly straightforward? What is the road condition (we will be in a diesel LC100)?

We've done similar trips before, but never gone straight through the National Park. Also aware of conditions at Safari Lodge.

    General advice welcomed.

    Thanks

Your best bet is to go up via Botswana / Francistown (If you have a few extra days you can include the Khama Rhino Sanctuary and Kubu island) to Panamatenga border post enter Hwange.

Alternatively you can stay overnight at Nata area in Bots and then drive through to Chobe (Don't forget the boat cruise down the Chobe - an absolute must, if you enjoy photography and wild life) and spend 2 nights there before crossing over to Zim via Vic Falls - Hwange.

Then move down to Bulawayo. Stay 2 nights at Motobo then move on to Zim ruins and spend a night there and then drive back to Jhb via Beit Bridge. BB is a lot easier on the return trip.

How many days do you have in total?

PM me if you require any more detail

Advice much appreciated - sounds like some great add ons. I'll PM you re Bots border posts.
We have just over two weeks and are keen to spend quite a bit of it in Bulawayo.

Anyone got any Hwange specific information?

Thanks AliCat hope you have an awesome trip.
If you can, at the Southern end, be sure to stop in at The Painted Dogs sanctuary - beautiful animals, highly endangered and interesting information
