    Default Meat into Botswana

    Hi,

I have been receiving conflicting reports on taking meat into Botswana. According to most posts and tourism info one can take meat from South to North as long as there are no foot and mouth outbreaks in SA or the South.

However, one party in my group claims that a good friend of his have been harassed at the cattle control points along the Francistown to Maun route and had their raw meat confiscated.

Any views/experiences in this regard will be appreciated.

    Regards
    Charl

I also have reports of people having hassles at the fence just south of Nata.

Best is to buy your meat in Maun if you are heading to Maun and in Kasane if you are heading there. Both towns have good butcheries whom are all willing to do pre-orders for SA visitors.

Do not hide meat, in due time it will explode in all visitor's to Botswana's faces.

    Jammer vir my afrikaans.

Jy mag vleis inneem, van Suid na Noord.

Maar, by Kasane by Choppies het ons verlede week R59 per kilo vir fillet. Steak en tbeen vir R49. So, hoekom stres.

Now I am also concerned. I was planning to buy meat and veg in Francistown to take to Nxai (based on the south to north rule). Might this be a problem?

We didn't have any problems taking meat, fruit or vedgetables South to North at any of the control points. No one even asked. North to South they did however stop us at every point and asked, and some cars were searched as well

    Default Fences

Can anyone tell me where are the Vet fences ? will be going in from Charles Hill to Ganzi across central Kalahari up to Baines / Nxai then down and across to Maun and then up to 3rd Bridge etc then back down to Maun, Ganzi & Kang and then across to Kaa and out that way. Which are the worst ones ?

Will they still take fruit / veggies / meat even if you have bought this in Bots ?

As far as I'm aware, if you move North to South they'll take raw meat, fruit and vedgetables regardless of where you bought it

Ok Lostshepard, there are 3 major fences that you will have to go through.

On your first leg via Ghanzi to the CKGR you turn right for the CKGR just before the first major one, Kuke. The track into the CKGR basically follows the vet fence. So that is sorted, but more mention of that just now.

If you exit the CKGR at Matswere gate and go north to Motopi to join the Maun-Nata tar road you are ok because you join the road after the other big one Makalamabedi.

Then from Nxai to Maun you will have to go through this one again but in theory if you have meat you will be able to get through because you are going east to west and movement in that direction is allowed.

Right, now you are in Maun. Stock up on meat here but only enough for your stay at 3rd Bridge because about 20 km north of Shorobe is the so called Buffalo fence. NO MEAT will be allowed through this one going south, but north is ok.

Ok back in Maun, do not buy meat because you are going south to Ghanzi and you will have to go through Kuke vet fence now where you turned to go the the CKGR. Also NO meat will be allowed south through this one.

IIRC there is a small gate before Kang, but you might find it unmanned.

    Hope it makes sense.

L - I am still planning my trip for December, but according to posts on the forum it seams it's best buying meat in Bots. No hassles with border posts & everybody that purchased it there are commenting about value for money and quality.
I've read about Sandy's butchery in Palapya.
Can anyone give me contact details of the farm outside Lobatse that also provides meat on order? We are taking an alternative route and missing Palapya...

Phone Mike at Sandy's in Palapye, they own butcheries elsewhere or will put you in touch with someone that can help.
When we bought from him a few weeks ago, he gave us his private home number in case we had any hassles anywhere in Bots. He knows a lot of people and is only to keen to help.

I bought very good quality meat from Beef Boys in Maun. Schalk Pretorius is very helpful.

We drove from Francistown to Kasane without problems.

We bought meat in Francistown at the picknpay, some of it was thrown in the bin before eating, the other stuff was OK.

We bought meat this April at Sandy's butchery in Palapaya and the meat was poor we eventually gave it all away.

Quick question on the other meat products.
I will buy my steak and fillet in Botswana for our next trip, but what about the other stuff.
