    Default TD5 Transfer box ratio

    Needing some info as I have noticed that my 2004 defender 110 TD5's transfer box ratio is given as 1,667:1 according to the sticker on the box.
    Interestingly going by the Ashcroft ratio calculator on the web it appears that the TD5 comes standard with a 1,441 ration box and not a 1,667 as per mine.
    Would love to reduce the engine refs for a more comfortable cruising though as I can get hold of a D2 1,221 ratio box for a straight swap, which actually started the idea.
    Having the issue with the sticker indicating 1,667 ratio, could I please ask other Defender 110 TD5 owners to comfirm the engine revolutions at say 100kmh and 120kmh in 5th gear. Mine runs at a little over 2500rpm @100kmh and at 120kmh approximately 3100rpm.

    Has a conversion like this been attempted before and if so, what is the verdict?

    Would appreciate any feedback.

    Both my td5 are 120km/h @ about 3000rpm. Yours might be 120km/h @ 3100rpm due to transfer ratio or tire size? Im running 235 85 R16. Will have a look at the ratio on the transfer case tomorrow. If I remember correctly LRWit is running a disco transfer case in his defender, ask him.

    Thanks for the response. I am running 265/75/16 Bridgestones. Might be the difference in tyre size only as according to the Ashcroft ratio calculator the 1,667 ratio should run 3986rpm @ 65mph (104kmh) in 4th, being the direct drive. I checked yesterday and my Defender runs approx. 3500rpm @ 105kmh in 4th.
    I am now fairly confident that the indication of 1,667 ratio on my box is wrong and I am actually running a 1,41 ratio box

    Tyre size does not affect the relationship between speedo and rev counter. It only impacts true speed (GPS) vs revs

    I would like to post the outcome of my query above in that the plunge was taken and the transfer box swaps were successfully done.
    My Defender now sits with a 1.221 ratio transfer box ex 1998 Disco 1 Auto and found the end result very satisfying. Engine revolutions at a comfortable 110 km/h is approx 2500rpm and it does not sound like it wants to take off and starts flying anymore. Sound levels is also much quieter and I can listen to my favorite Boere musiek again.
    Have not had the opportunity to travel a longish distance as yet but hope to soon. Fuel consumption will be measured over a period and will report back for whoever wants to know. Planning a three week tour of the Northern Natal, Mpumalanga and Swaziland Nature reserves next month using back roads as much as possible.
    Looking forward to it and counting the days/hours.

    WE married up my Td5 to a D2 V8. I am also very very happy with the outcome!!

    Have you had her offroad yet?? would love to know what she feels like in 1st and 2nd low, and still have to take her of the beaten track!!

    As far as I know the low range ratio stays the same.. It's onlyu high range that is different

    Yes, low range stays the same so offroad in low range will not be different. Because high range is now lower means more comfortable high speed (110 kmh !!!!!) cruising, also 120 kmp if you want to albeit slightly less power for uphill driving. Is not an issue because of the other advantages such as less engine noise and expected extended engine life.

    to the best of knowledge it was only the 2.8 BM defender that ran the 1.6:1 ratio TC

    T-case ratio is 1.211

    Ashcroft sells a 1.1 ratio gear. This will however only drop your revs by 300rpm @ 120 km/h.

    Fastest, cheapest solution for long distance cruising is larger diameter tyres...........

    You can go down to a 1.001 ratio to land that gear cluster you looking about 10k then you still need to strip LT230 and install gear cluster

    Ashcrofts still do it as imported one 2 months ago for a LT230 had to build for some one thatís why said about 10k to land it
