Done Some micro overlander setup on our Jimny.

This was a test our vehicle setup trip to the Kzn south and North Coast last week for our Kgalagadi trip Later this year.

Went down to Caribbean Estates 1st. then Drove up to Salt rock Caravan Park and stood basically on the beach rocks(This was absolutely fantastic and will go there again, they are just very expensive) . Then went to Cape Vidal for 5 days. Unfortunately didn't make it to Sodwana cause ran into some mechanical problems and lost the engine on the Jimny. (Wich has now been upgraded from a 1300 to a 1800).


And then we have a much more minimalistic setup even.. Popup tent




And then when a trailer and rtt setup but needs some changes.

Last setup is the big canvas dome tent and a absolutely horrific dining shelter that we have given back to the in laws cause it is just such a mission to get it up. (They gave it to us to test out.. glad we did cause both me and SWAMBO are lazy when it comes to setting up camp. it must be done within 5-10 minutes.

We have our NL60 Twin in the Jimny So it is always close by our tent /gazebo

I am interested to know how you fit all of that into the Jimny and small trailer though?
I have always liked the Jimny although have never owned one but the packing space ?
How does it manage with the trailer, RTT and load ? Or is that the reason for upgrading the motor ?
Just interested.
Maybe I will get a "previously loved" one sometime down the line if circumstances change.

Packing the Jimny is like playing tetris to get everything to fit, and there is definitely 0 space for Nice to have's. you only take what you need.

My trip to Kzn the last 2 weeks where to get a feeling of what the Rtt does with the Jimny as it was the 1st official long trip we did with it with that setup..

Also for kgalagadi testing I weighed absolutely every item we loaded on the Jimny. Total load was 465kg
100kg on the Roof (including roofrack weight). The rest was in the car including me and my Wife's weight..

We got better fuel consumption with the Rtt setup than towing the little trailer.
Avg with the rtt setup was 10.4km/L (kept it to 100km/h and 3500rpm, the jimny seems to be the happiest there.
Avg with Towing the trailer and rtt was 8.2km/L. and we struggled to get to 100km/h (it was horrible to drive like that)

I have done upgrades to the suspension and widened track with 32mm spacers. And now my latest upgrade was the power upgrade from the 1300cc to the 1800cc Engine.

The Ratel was left at home for the Klein Pella trip, bought a 3x3m dome tent and used that with the dome as base.

Here at Riemvasmaak, used the awning as it started raining setting up camp. The value of an awning should not be underestimated, never had one till about 6 months ago and to me it was money well spent.


At Klein Pella campsite we used the dome as well. Not a great angel of pic though.
