Post problem with purchase of 2 hand car - any advise pls

3 weeks ago I bought a 2 hand Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 (150 000km) from a dealership not close to me.
After speaking to the dealership asking questions and doing all the regular stuff. FSH, Roadworthy, No accident, extended warranty (3rd party), checked the vin no with Chrysler SA no problems.

It was driven down with no problems.
The car was delivered and everything was in order and as promised.

Driving the car for a week with no problems.
Went hunting the next week, upon retuning driving along the engine light comes on. Turns out to be the turbo.
I have only driven about 3/4 of a tank with the car. (not fast or far)

I have informed and spoken the the dealership, that said to take the car in.
I contacted the 3rd party warranty company just to check what they say and where I can take it.

Taking the car in on Monday to get fixed (RMI approved as per insurance)

    -------

I want to know who is liable and what are my options.
I don't feel like I should be the one liable in a situation like this.

    Any help appreciated.
    thanks

    How far is far?

At this point the dealer is still responsible. You have the CPA and MIOSA on your side. Not all dealers are MIOSA registered, but everyone is covered by the CPA. CPA covers you for 6 months. This sounds like a latent defect - the dealers problem.

Tell the warranty people the details, they have the lawyer power to fight the dealer.

I can't see the "problem". The vehicle has done 150 k km. If the insurance (extended warranty) and the dealer are playing along and fixing it, you are one of the lucky ones.

I think you get 30days warranty from the dealer anyway.
I am sure the dealer is insured.

I think you should ask the dealer to repair it instead of trying to claim on your warranty. The dealer is obligated to fix it and you shouldnt have to use your extended 3rd party warranty.

I must say though if you are covered by the warranty then I can't see any issues on claiming from them

I assume the warranty was in place already before you bought the car so a 30 day thing should not apply since it is just transfer of ownership
and the warranty generally is not like insurance where you may get a increase in premiums so it costs you nothing

Ok, I spoke to a guy at RMI.
He says the Jeep is 2nd hand so putting in a new turbo is not fair as the car is 2nd hand.
He said I should use the 3rd party warranty and the shortfall the dealership must pay.
In a way I feel it is fair.

I will now contact the dealership and speak to the guy.

Honestly speak the the warranty company and here what they say
In most cases there isn't a excess and if they are willing to fit new one then you score

Plus ask the guy if he fits second hand exhausts, clutch kits, brake discs and spark plugs too because the car is 2nd hand?

A properly re conditioned Turbo might work but just 2nd hand one would not be my cup of tea

DeonvanderMerwe thanks for that, was never aware of MIOSA

Veneficus: Will do, the dealership is handling the situation very professionally.
he is busy talking to the mechanics and said he will contact the warranty and get it sorted. Will call me afterwards to let me know the progress. Sounds OK to me. (so far)
I also prefer a new unit. I agree reconditioned is ok, but not to sure when it comes to turbo's, but im no mechanic.

Johan: jiss, I have paid. I am sure it is all in order, have not had a problem yet Im on their system. I read all their papers but did not check the dates. Good one!

    Follow up:

Turbo is out, waiting on the warranty peeps to sent a assessor around for inspection.

    R21000.00 to replace,
Warranty is apparently 200% cover, should they pay it will be R17000, the shortfall will have to be met by the dealership. Or am or wrong?

    That's one expensive turbo.
Garret original turbo for Disco 2 was less than R10k when I replaced mine. What turbo does Jeep use?

It also uses a garret and you can get a new one for half that price directly from them in Kempton Park.
    Jeep, there is only one.

    Hi
Sorry for taking so long to get back.
I am very glad to report the Jeep is fixed and seems to be in good nick!
Turbo replaced, injectors & pump checked, all good now.
The whole process was relatively painless, just took time.
The warranty paid out R19000 incl. vat and the dealer the rest.

Time for a bit of fun....

Some times, the "stealers" DO get it right, I guess.

Imagine if you bought that from a private seller.

And yes, I'm saying it again.........if ever anyone did know about that defect (thus defining it as "latent"), chances are 99% that it was the previous owner, not the dealer.

Dealers do'nt buy Jeeps with flickering Turbo lights.
