    Morning.

I think I won’t understand how you guys feel about the look of the new boy in town because I am a Cruiser fan but this new one looks cool.

Best method to get pitting out, wet sand from 400 grit up to 3000.
Then a lot of polishing till it is clear. Add sealing coat.

There are only a few small marks left from the deepest pitting but I wasn't going to take that much material off with water paper for them. For me the added expense of having to go buy the correct clearcoat, thinners and hardener for this type of plastic is just not worth it. Even half a litre of clearcoat will be enough for 10 pairs of headlights and the smallest quantities of hardener and thinners is far too much for such a small job. By the time I got to use the stuff again it would have expired or gone hard in the tin so I'd rather take an hour to polish the lights again in 7 or 8 years if I still have the Disco then.

It's my opinion that nothing else is needed after the polish I've given it. If other guys want to experiment further with painting and applying other films they are welcome to come give us their feedback.
I'm happy with what I have done.

I understand that, but I was just thinking that after the polishing a layer of clear film will prevent further chipping/pitting.

Yes it could but applying it without any minute air bubbles that will expanded with heat can be challenging. The UV resistant film is normally applied to stickers before they are cut by passing the two through pressure rollers.

All headlights are acrylic today. So it is harder than anything you put over it.

Sand it with 1500grid and then 2000. Then buff.

The problem is without the UV protection I find the lens degrades much faster, every 12 months or so they need another polish. That's in the sun every day, if the vehicle is garaged most of the time then it won't be a problem.

And yes it is sucky to do it almost every 12 months.... But it keeps it looking fresh

Headlights are still Polycarbonate with a surface treatment to prevent pitting. All the other lights are acrylic. The challenge with Acrylic is it is more brittle and prone to cracking where PC is a lot tougher. The risk of dazzling oncoming traffic is the reason headlights are still PC.

Started off down the road of removing the gearbox to sort the clutch issue out.
Up on stands, cross members off, front pipe and centre box out, rear prop off.
Almost finished making the support cradles for the jack, so actual removal is waiting on that task's completion.
Hoping to rebuild the double cardan at the same time, if I can find where I hid the parts for it....

More to follow as it happens...

TC is out, cleaned and ready for new seals.

I have one question for the experts, on the bracket for the Hi-Lo shift cable is the bracket for the wiring harness, which I discovered has one portion of the wiring cut and taped off.
It is a 2 wire plug with a white wire with a brown trace and a pink wire with a green trace, what is it for? Does my vehicle (GS spec) need it, because I don't see a corresponding place where it should connect to.

One good thing, the double cardan looks in great shape, from the punch marks on the yokes, it was rebuilt at some point, so my spares can stay in stock.

Today's mission is to finish the cradle to hold the gearbox on the jack and drop that to see what's going on with the clutch.
Will be a busy day with that and the MotoGP...
    Cheers,
    John

I have never in all my days seen a release bearing in that state.
There are a few bits still in the bellhousing along with some of the ball bearings.
Tomorrow's mission is to remove the flywheel and do the rear main seal and check the condition of the clutch plate and flywheel....here's hoping it's not another R11k's worth of parts to buy....

    i had a strange weekend.

used the disco3 on friday night.
    parked it

the next morning battery so flat that the starter sounding like a machine gun.

    put it on charge.

    when the charger indicated complete.
    it barely started.
    looks like battery is dead.

    bought a new battery today.
on removal of the old battery i see it melted a hole through the top and leaked out fluid that corroded the hold down bracket.

I am not sure as I wasn't driving it at the time, but it apparently didn't make that much noise.

The clutch was "not releasing properly" for a few days then suddenly the pedal went down to the floor and no clutch.
I guess that was when it finally pushed through the plastic part of the carrier... When that happened, it made a racket
and then the car was parked.
