Default Planning first Botswana trip - Seeking Advice

    Hello everyone,

I am new on the forum and have spent some time looking through all the threads, I am amazed at how helpful and knowledgable everyone is.

Three friends and I are planning a trip from Cape Town into Botswana via the Caprivi Strip. I will post the itinerary below but the basic idea is once we have entered Botswana to hop over to Vic Falls and spend 3 nights there. From there we will head to Savuti and Moremi after that we will spend some time in the CKGR after which we will head home to Natal via a few nights at Khubu Island and a stopover at Khama Rhino sanctuary. The trip is planned to be 23 days long but there is a bit of room for change.

SUN 10 Leave CT. Arive Fish River Canyon. Spend night.
MON 11 Leave Fish River Canyon early AM. Arrive Soss spend night.
TUE 12 Spend day Soss. Night Soss.
WED 13 Spend AM Soss. Arrive to Walvis, spend night.
THU 14 Leave Walvis early. Arrive Rundu eve. Spend night Rundu.
FRI 15 Leave Rundu early. Arrive Vic Falls, spend night. (Admin Kasane)
SAT 16 Vic Falls day and night.
SUN 17 Vic Falls day and night.
MON 18 Leave Vic Falls early. Arrive Kasane (Admin), spend night.
TUE 19 Day in Kasane, spend night at Fishing lodge (Kasane).
WED 20 Kasane admin. Leave Kasane. Arrive Savuti, spend night.
THU 21 Spend day and night Savuti.
FRI 22 Spend day and night Savuti.
SAT 23 Leave Savuti. Arrive Moremi, spend night.
SUN 24 Spend day and night Moremi.
MON 25 Leave Moremi AM, (Maun admin). Arrive CKGR, spend night.
TUE 26 Spend day and night CKGR.
WED 27 Spend day and night CKGR.
THU 28 Leave CKGR early AM (Rakops admin). Arrive Khubu, spend night.
FRI 29 Spend day and night Khubu.
SAT 30 Leave Khubu brunch (Lethlakane admin). Arrive Rhino sanctuary, spend night.
SUN 01 Leave Rhino sanctuary early AM. Arrive JHB, spend night.
MON 02 Leave JHB after brunch, arrive PMB.

I would be really grateful if you could give me some advice on the following:

    1. Which camps would you suggest we stay at in Savuti and the CKGR?
    2. What is the best way to book accomodation? (Online, email, telephone etc.)
    3. Is it necessary to book ahead for ALL of the camps we intend to stay at?
    4. Are there any changes we should make to our itinerary?
    5. It is my birthday on the 22nd on November and it would be great to do something memorable. Any suggestions?

We are all experienced campers and are all enthusiastic about the bush. We have spent much time travelling and camping in South Africa but this will be our first trip of this nature into any of our neighboring countries. If you havent picked it up already I am a youngster and we plan to do this trip after our Varsity exams.

I really look forward to any input from the forum members, let me know if you have any questions regarding the trip.

    Best Regards,

    Greg Martin

Greg, can't talk outside of CKGR but when I go back I'm heading for Passarge 2, halfway down the valley with great views, as Elize says the Kori group are nicely placed as well for exploring, Kori 2 has IMHO best views over Deception Valley.

Good luck with the trip looks like you'll be seeing a lot of the countryside :-)

Agreed, Walvis to Rundu in one day is a killer. My advice would be to generally opt for fewer stops and less travelling - do a couple of long days, and have fewer destinations.

Agree with Elize and Tony. Walvis to Rundu in one day is no way. And agree with Tony, too many stops means too much time collapsing tents. My feeling about a trip like this is to be flexible and don't set your itinerary in concrete. We went this way two years ago, and the greatest pleasure was not knowing where we were going to spend the night... this often led to sleeping in unknown places with unbelievable game (e.g. along the Kongola River). Your time in Kasane and Vic Falls sounds like you could cut a day off both. Just my two cents.
