As a result of being asked to leave the "Gauteng Member Spotting" thread to the technologically handicapped and serial-wavers, I decided to create a thread for the radio-equipped folks to share experiences.

This is a thread for discussion and planning/reporting contact you have had with fellow members on ORRA1 which (subject to the powers not vested in me by anyone) I am officially proclaiming as the "standard" listening channel for Gauteng members to monitor while driving.

(If you don't know what frequency and tone ORRA1 is then please ask your radio dealer to help you. It is the first "new" ORRA channel with tone encoding. )

For those fortunate enough to be licensed radio amateurs, lets also agree to monitor the 700 repeater frequency for contacts from fellow hams.

And now that Vossie and Theunis have decreed it, those members on 29MHz shall henceforth monitor channel 15 for contact from your fellow forum members.

This is a fun space, and not a place to discuss licenses, the law, ICASA, ORRA, AAWDC, ANC, DA, FBI, CIA or any if that stuff that already has an appropriate home elsewhere on this forum.

    A few suggestions:

Along with forum names, please also use your call signs. Apart from being a legal requirement to use your callsign during every transmission (yes it is!) this helps identify us positively - especially when there are more than one person in the area with the same name or similar names.

If you want to be contacted, please display your callsign on your vehicle. Preferably alongside your forum sticker. This is also a legal requirement believe it or not. Besides that it just makes sense - instead of calling "who is that sexy blue D3 next to me" you will be able to say "Z133 come in for xxxxx" and it will be very clear who is calling whom.

And don't be shy. If you hear someone on the radio that you know is a forum member, call them once there is a gap in conversation. Eg Twindisco called me yesterday while I was trying for Gasman. It was cool to find out that he could receive me in his office in halfway on a handheld. Now I also know he listens in and will call him more often.

Lets use this resource we have been given. And lets have fun with it. Grumpy okes stay on the other threads.

Oh, and please keep it clean. Firstly it is a legal requirement (i know, everyone knows that, right?) that you don't use bad language or any kind of discrimination on air, but very importantly you don't know what tender young ears are perhaps in the car/room with the other guys listening. I heard some fairly blue language on ORRA1 yesterday afternoon believe it or not.

    Hi Baben

Sorry for the BAD word!! I will have to get you a beer for that.

After being K.KED out by Theunis during the week, I was fortunate enough to meet him last night and even get him to have a beer at my favourite pub. O, Baben was also there!

It was a great example of the use of ORRA1 Theinis heard me calling Gasman for directions, but gasman was already sucking down a frosty inside the pub, so Theunis called me, then he helped me find the pub, as well as a great parking spot

    Hi Guys!

May I also report here that I heard Baben calling Gasman last week Friday or Thursday.

I tried calling back but was obviously out of range. Was at the Giloolys interchange at the time.

I did briefly have comms with Subok also last week Friday.

This is a great start guys. Agreed, don't be shy and let's have fun. Its great to give and receive updates on the traffic conditions on the N1 for example.

Baben, my ham callsign is on both my vehicles. I just need to have the Orra ones made.

Now somebody must just plug their unit into an Internet repeater, and break out in other cities too!

Great Idea Anthony, seemed a bit silly driving around all day with a radio and nobody saying hello.

Will be on ORRA 1 from now on, should make the daily commute more enjoyable!

Can we make the same arrangements for 29Mhz users? Which channels would be the best to use?

I can't advise on that one unfortunately. Someone knowledgable on 29MHz will hopefully come along soon.

Can I make a suggestion, I suspect that a lot of us are actually on the air, but we dont know about each other. Every now and then, state ur callsighn on the air, so the others can hear that someone is around.

Guess you must have also done a good installation, Keith! And that with a quarter-wave antenna.

100% Eric The little quarter wave doesn't look as impressive as all those Oke's with whips but hey it does a heck of a job !

Just passing the Woodmead offramp on the N1 North at that time and descending rapidly. That would explain why we lost comms.

Made a 4/5 signal strength contact with Twindisco yesterday whilst he was in his garage at the time in Rooihuiskraal.

Good comms al the way from the Botha offramp to R21 offramp.

    Nice chatting to you Pieter!

Aah, but here's where the little quarter-wave will outperform the 5/8 antennas. The quarter-wave antenna manages the full ORRA frequency spread (all three frequencies) *much* better than its longer countermates. We only use quarter-wave antenna on all our work vehicles, but then we have over 30 commercial VHF frequencies programmed into our radios. A quarter-wave antenna is superior over undulating terrain as well, compared to the 5/8 whips.
