Default Colt 2800 Tdi Clubcab diesel usage

I use to own a Colt 2800 Tdi D/C Rodeo 4X4. After a lot of problems I sold it. That bakkie gave me 680km with 95 liter diesel, which is 100km less what CAR magazine is claming. Currently I have a Colt 2800 Tdi Clubcab. According to (http://www.diskdrive.co.za/road_test..._tdi_test.html) my Colt should give me 15 liter/100km. I don't know what my Colt's consumtion is, since it broke down a day before my leave was due to start. R 21000.00 of engin damage.

Can anyone tell what the best consumtion figures can be obtained fron this Colt?

    Thanks

When my bakkie was still stock standard I was getting on average about 780km (edited) per 86 litres. My fill up is basically 86 litres each time. Other guys here were getting worse than that.

Regarding the dud motors I'd say that maybe you need to look at how you drive them. While the TDi's have their problems it's mostly due to how they are driven. Fit an EGT guage and keep an eye on it.

(I can't even tell you to search "EGT" because for some or other reason the search facility chucks it out )
Edit: OK cancel my moan the search works. Go read up on "EGT"

You should easily be able to get 12.5l/100km (8km/l) and even better....

The worst consumption I ever saw on my clubcab was about 13.3l/100km, and that was fully laden with a spare wheel and a whack of jerrycans on the roofrack, and a fair bit of low-range 4x4 (total 2700km on that trip).

So, 90l should easily give you 720km, if not more.

Ave consumption on my 2.8 TDI D/C is just over 9 km/l - worst was 8.7 km/l fully loaded with 5 people in and traveling at around 100 - 120 kmph.

Last few tanks (before it also blew a head) was still at around 9.1 - 9.5 km/l.

On mine I work on 7 km/l. That is over 14L per 100km. Perhaps why mine is still fine after almost 8 years and the worst Africa can offer? With a caravan on tow 5.5 - 6 km/L, trip to Tanzania 8.3 but that included days of very slow driving.

My 2001 2.8 Rodeo 4x4 does the same.

I keep it at a steady 110km/h and always get 10l/100km.

The best I ever got was on a trip to Kruger Park where I got 1000km on about 85liters...

Werner... While I'm not doubting your experience I find that hard to believe without something being wrong - AC made absolutely no difference to my Colt's fuel consumption whatsoever. There is so much torque, the engine doesn't even feel the AC. Unless your AC idle compensation was set wrong and the engine raced when the AC kicked in.

Between 8 and 8.5, worst is when on the Wild Coast and spend most of the time in 4wd high and low, drops to about 7.5.

Better than my V6 at 5-5.5.

    Cheers

Simon, I noticed my Colt revving higher when A/C kicks in and drop again when it kicks out - is this wrong? Should I ask the engineering firm who is currently doing my motor to set the Idle compensation?

    Tks.

No, this is it doing it's job - it should do that. My point to Werner was that it might be overcompensating....

As a matter of interest, something that might help if you want to increase your revs while doing an obstacle, without increasing speed, is to switch the AC on.

EDIT: Actually, thinking about it, I'm going to retract my statement to Werner.. IF he spends a LOT of time idling in traffic then the AC will increase consumption, but not by 15% or so

Sorry I thought about that and it sounded wrong - I suppose I really meant if you're doing an obstacle and want to reduce the risk of stalling...

An often overlooked feature of the Colts is the hand throttle! I use it for exactly the purpose you mention above works like a charm!

You can set the engine speed to whatever you want and lock it in place, let go of the clutch and you've got Land Cruiser 200 style crawl control!

    Default Better Consumption?

While I still the owner of the Colt 2800 Tdi d/c 4X4 a car salesman told me that guys like Dastek or SAC can calibrate the injectors and diesel pumps to better the consumption, without losing power. Is it true? If so i would like to do it to my Clubcab.

    Hi guys
When my Colt was new (to me that is), I got about 9 km/l. Now when driving nicely, 120 and less with nothing over 3000rpm, I constantly get over 10 km/l. I'm quite pleased!

I get ave 9.5km/l, very far off Eltekons figure.

What should be mentioned is that I VERY seldomly go over 110 km/h.
