    Default Crawler gear leader board.

SEE POST 3 FOR ACTUAL LEADERBOARD.

This comes from these 2 threads:

http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...34#post1717334 - where the Amarok guys got all excited when they discovered they had 2.72:1 low range

and this thread: http://4x4community.co.za/forum/show...63#post1717163 where the hobbitses got all uptight because SA4x4 said they were underendowed in the Low Range department.

A leader board was posted in the Amarok one, but it's short on info and incorrect.

so - post 2 will be the actual info and post 3 will be the abbreviated leaderboard, which I will endeavor to keep updated.

I think a STOCK board and a MODIFIED Board is in order. pretty self explanatory. perhaps we can make it a sticky, this info is hard to come by... and it is a VERY importantr measure of off road ability.

what we need from you is the following:

your vehicle, if standard state STOCK or list mods made, model, motor (inc CC, power at rpm, toruque at rpm) ,gearbox (manual/auto) , gearbox ratios (all) Transfer case , low range ratio, high range ratio, diff ratio, tyre size - actual size (e.g. 285/70R17) plus diameter in metres please. weight of vehicle (Tare and GVM)

then you need to calculate your crawler ratio and crawler multiplier (see formula below) and give us the info in the following format:

STOCK/MAKE/MODEL/ENGINE/GEARBOX/CRAWLER RATIO/CRAWLER MULTIPLIER/MAX TORQUE AT WHEEL (N.m)/MAX AVAILABLE FORCE AT WHEEL ([email protected]/h)/MAX FORCE per kg(GVM)/max force at wheel (Tare)

    calcs:

Crawler Ratio: 1st gear ratio x low range ratio x diff ratio
Crawler multiplier: Crawler ratio / Tyre radius (in metres)
max torque at wheel : Crawler Ratio x max engine torque
Max Available Force: Crawler multiplier x max torque = N
Speed of max Force: engine rpm at max torque / Crawler ratio x tyre diameter in metres x pi x 0.06 = km/h
max Force per kg (GVM) : Max force / GVM
max force per kg (tare) : max force/Tare

see post 4 as an example below... If you struggle with the calcs, just post the info you have and I'm sure someone will sort it out for you... If your vehicle is already listed, please check the info/calcs and comment if you want...

EDIT - See attached spread sheet from Elliot - punch your numbers into the Blue section, and copy the result in the bottom right box into your post.

PLEASE NOTE - you need to submit the details for the" full details post" as well as the summary from the spread sheet to get your details entered!

Current Leaderboard, but we need more details to make it meaningful..

Jeep Sahara 3.8 manual is wrong below - should be 47.07 Crawler ratio...

Yes, the list needs work. Some did not say if their car was diesel or petrol or manual or auto.

The Calculations I've put in are designed to give some more meaningful info than just a ratio.

the last one - force and speed - is probably the most meaningful measurement of rock crawling ability - and sand driving ability, wher you don't want really low speeds... It also gives a realistic comparison of something with huge torque - big diesels - against the high revving but low torque petrol motors.

as you can see - the Jimny can suddenly look very good against a Wrangler Sahara when speed and tyre size are considered... One must also bear in mind that an auto box has it's own multiplier in terms of the torque convertor, which we are not taking into account as you can never get that info...

    stolen from the Suzi thread...

this gives a crawler ratio of 33.37:1 - which doesn't seem that great on the face of it for a manual - BUT as the GV has small wheels - not sure of the size - it will pick it's score up compared to bigger vehciles with a shorter diff ratio and bigger tyres.

hey - you okes have to do the summaries too, I'll never get any work done

but yes, quickly, 38.1:1 overall reduction doesn't look all that great, but when you factor tyre size to score 114 it looks a lot better.

Please remember to state Stock or Modified...

EDIT - okay, did it to get things rolling...

    wahahahah!!!

I knew someone would have one of those!!!

definitley will put it up there if you put in all the info - the additional box is a modification isn't it? We'll put the stock one up as well as the modified, so Please do!!!

will be interesting to add a "Force at wheels / GVM kg " figure too - the ultimate measure of low range!!!

Isn't there like a multiplier of 1.8 for the torque converter on an auto box to factor in as well?

Well, yes, but it depends on the torque conertor and rpm.

A lot of info that would be very hard to get.

I've split off the Autos from the manuals, as a good rule of thumb 1.8 to 2 for the multiplying action of a torque convertor is good if you want to directly compare a manual to an auto.

This is why autos are often better offroad, and definitely for rock crawling!

Will check Apoc calculations later and add the tyre diameter and final torque calcs.
    note I added a Force/mass field too!

that is the ultimate measurement - you'll need the GVM for that though.

anything over 9.8 and you can drive straight up!!!

well, 37s and 5.13s is pretty wild. you'll do some high rpm at 120km/h... but you'll score big on low end torque

32" (812.8mm diamter) and 4.1 is Force Multiplier (from propshaft, NOT overall) of 1.66
    37" (939.8mm) and 5.13 is a Force Multiplier of 2.41

is yours a Rubicon T/C or a Sahara? will be intersting to see how it scores against a 3.6 with those low ratios...

I'm interested to see how the bigger engined vehicles do with lower crawling gears - those big 4.5 Toyota engines make a lot of torque... the Bigger Diesels and V8s in thigns like discos and Range Rovers will also be interesting..

do you have the details for your hemi? ratios and power/torque etc?
