Question Botswana Self Drive - July 2013

Hi all, this is my first post here so grateful for any input from other members here. While myself and my husband are experienced in self driving/offroading in Kenya we are about to embark on our first self drive in Botswana. I have a few questions and first is to get some route and fuel advice please for the following trip (mid July) details of camps etc booked at bottom.

    1. Camps/lodges are booked and we will have a Land Rover 110 with a long range fuel tank (129L). We have the option of 2/3 additional jerry cans and not sure if this is overkill? Would two cans be sufficient perhaps?

    2. I would appreciate advice on routes, especially in Moremi section etc, we dont mind small/medium water crossings but perhaps as we are without a snorkel we need to minimise to smaller crossings?

No doubt other questions will pop up but heres two for a starter! Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Route:

    South Gate Campsite
    Third Bridge Campsite
    Third Bridge Campsite
    Third Bridge Campsite
    Xakanaxa Campsite
    North Gate Campsite
    Savuti Campsite
    Savuti Campsite
    Savuti Campsite
    Ihaha Campsite
    Chobe Safari Lodge (Pula)

HI there and welcome to the forum.

Camp site selection is good except for South Gate, rather noisey at times.

2 jerry cans will be ample, also depends on the game drives you do.River crossings will be no problem in Moremi ,even without a snorkle, levels are lower this year than before.

Thanks Puma for the reply and the welcome and advise
I have heard some in this forum talk of travelling back from North gate to south gate and onto Moremi, does this avoid winding around the river and is the better option. Sounds a bit daft but are the routes noticeable! (I am not expecting signposts obviously.. Or will I be surprised. We are likely to do LOTS of game viewing, given this would you suggest we increase to three or cans or two still ample? As we have campsites with shower facilities and water (assume this is correct!) then we do not need to carry water other than in built in water tank i presume.

Hi, read my report at http://4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=95464.

    The routs are reasonably signposted.

The camp sites were fully serviced, so I carried only 20l of water.

You don't need to retract to SG on the way to Savuti.
Just exit at NG and follow the main road if you don't want to follow the Khwai tracks.
But be warned, this tracks are the most rewarding for game viewing and you would miss out.
