    Default Rhodes to

    Hello

We are going to Rhodes this weekend, considering driving from there to Tiffindell, from there more or less East along the Lesotho border past Tenahead mountain reserve back to Naude's nek pass. Anyone done this? I am new to 4x4ing, got a Raider 4.0 4x4. Is it advisable for a beginner, how long should it take more or less? I am guessing 100km round trip.

    Thanks!

Yes - have done it, but the other way around. It's a stunning drive and easily doable in any 4x4 vehicle - even a 4 x 2 with a good driver. If it is snowing you'll obviously have to be careful.

None of the passes are death defying - they're just amazingly scenic. Even the patrol road along the Lesotho border is more of a track, but nothing really scary. One of the more difficult ones is the Lapa Munnik trail from Maclear to Barkly. It can get pretty tricky.

I would suggest to inform someone on your route of your plans and arrival as anything can happen and signal is not available always. If it really has to snow down you might get in trouble and at least people will know where you should be.

Be very carefull on the patrol road from Tiffendale to Tenahead Lodge, water is constantly seeping out and in cold conditions it may be very icy. Lots of gates along that route.

100% - that becomes ice pretty quickly.

Check with the locals in Rhodes before heading out - if it snows, Naude's Nek can become impassable, and as mentioned by others, ice on the roads can be a game changer. Also watch out and don't enter any of the dips and onto the bridges at speed - if there's any ice or water about they can be very dangerous. I don't see any big weather systems moving through at the moment, but there may be left over stuff about from the last big frontal system.

So how would you get from the Tiffendel entrance to this service road? I've been there once a few years back, would love to go back again and do that section

Just make sure you have enough fuel. Rhodes does not have a filling station.
One of my friends did a tour there earlier this here and he almost ran out of fuel in Rhodes.

Rhodes does have a fuel station but they top it up with a small tank on a trailer so you might have to wait to get fuel if they run dry.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it sounds like it is worth while.

I will fill up before Rhodes (good tip!), tell others about my route and planned time, and will be very careful of the ice. Make sense to also ask locals!

gerbek1, I see the road on Google maps and tracks4africa's website, on garmin 2012 I see it as well but you to zoom in all the way to Tiffindel, it is really a track (dotted line) there.

That's an awesome part of the world, nice driving too. You should do Lundean's neck pass sometime, really spectacular!

After I was really keen to take the route next to the border past Tenahead, we got to Tiffindell and decided to ski. Finished about 4.30pm and decided it is better to go straight back to Rhodes, do not want to try an unknown road in the dark when it could be icy.

The Rhodes area will definitely see me again, and I would more than ever love to drive some of the less accessible routes there. gavpike and gerbek1, I will remember your recommended passes.

The road to Tiffindell was not difficult, but I am glad I did not drive the city golf I saw up there down! I saw people from Tenahead and asked them about the planned route, they did not seem concerned about it, but then there was almost no snow. I suspect that can change quickly. We did see ice in shadowy places up high.

    I include a few photos:

The car with ice on the wind shield at 8:45

The window washer water still frozen at 10:45 after probably a hour driving

Me and gogga on skis (No, I did not do well )

    View driving back.

    Thanks for all the info!
