on that note, there was talk at the last jeep club trip to the dunes that emperor zilla is/was planning to close the dunes down for recreational offroading. does anyone know anything about it?

The dunes are staying open for business, so you don't have to worry.

How about a online booking/purchase system? Each permit is allocated a trace number, which I can print at home/office. The guard at the gate is given access to an updated/live list of bought permits (maybe a 3G tablet or something) so that he can authenticate it when you arrive at the gate. Trace number, ID number and vehicle spec can be used to authenticate. Once through the gate the guard can "cancel/tick as used" the permit, job done.

That said, I'm probably expecting too much

Marius, this is council that we are dealing with, so we need to be realistic. Online would be perfect though.

As a matter of interest in relation to the current controls, until recently the procedure for the guard at the gate was to complete a register with all relevant details. At the end of everyday, they would roll it up & stick it into the ceiling of the guard hut, thus insuring better insulation during winter. Ingenious!

I think the thing that would be the best option is if permits were issued at the gate with no cash payment but by using a debit/credit card machine.

A solution might be :Buying Blank permits upfront, say 5 at a time.

The guard at the gate date stamps them, making them only valid for the day, and cannot be re-used. Simple.

Selling permits at the gate isn't gonna fly. The solution needs to be one where cash can be accepted.

Yup that's what I figured, but worth a shot

Fact is I don't see them doing away with the current system. Corruption, etc. scares the crap outa the council, they know they can't really trust some of their employees. I doubt they would allow a cash only deal outside the safety of their respective offices.

So the only way would be either online, or a credit/debit card payment system at a convenient location. If they refuse to change with the times, then I really can't see a way around it. Tech is the only way forward

I don't think that credit cards are accepted at the municipality. I doubt they will do it at a hut.

I cant see a problem with this suggestion.
So The permits would be available almost 24 hrs.
I agree , I think someone should approach the owner to see if he was willing to sell permits ,even if it is R10 more it is still more convenient than going to council offices and then approach the council . Most people will fill up and buy refreshments while getting their permits anyway . I think he would be willing but it's the council that will be the problem as I have already asked them to suggest in their next meeting if we could buy a few tickets at a time but said they could not , no reason given.

    Neil, agreed.

NOT selling permits at the gate, but having the security write/stamp the date and Reg number on entry. One time use only per permit only then.

That way you can buy x permits beforehand, and have them available for the spur of the moment situations.

I do not even understand why they need to be date stamped. If your name and permit number is on the log, then it is cool. Stamping is a waste of time.

Is there no way we can pay the cash into a dedicated bank account, or the municipal account, email the POP to Chantelle (or whoever) and then she emails the permit back to us. This can be done during the normal work hours in the week. It just means I don't have to take time off work and fight traffic and parking to get a permit?
