Exclamation NEW! Shared 4x4Community Event Galleries

I have spent a bit of time this week on shared event galleries. It is something that's been bugging me for a while, and eventually managed to find a plan.

We have all these events, outings, trips, GTG, competitions all over South Africa, we get to see some pics uploaded on the threads, but usually only see a handful, and it is a major pain to upload lots of photos into a thread.

So presenting the new shared event galleries:
    http://photos.4x4community.co.za

BUT, here is the catch, it will only work with input from those people who have photos of the event, and is prepared to upload large (at least 1meg) images to the gallery.

The upload process is really easy, it does however require me to create a gallery for each event, and sending the upload key, but that is not a problem.

    How it works:
For example this weekend is the Bridgestone Club Challenge, with Team TUFF STUFF driven by 4x4Community.

I go and create the gallery in the relevant place, give it a secret word or password, and it generates a unique address for uploading directly into that gallery.

If you attend an event I PM you this address, you click on it, click BROWSE to select the images from your hard drive and click upload, and it is as simple as that!

I have created top level categories for each region, within each region I created sub categories for each year. Seperate to that is for example other categories like Lesotho, or National Events.

How many people are sitting with folders full of photos from years back? I am trying to get those images from 2006 onwards uploaded. (I already have some pics of Spike's Baviaans visit in 2006 on there!).

Go have a look. It is hosted offsite, and entirely seperate to the forum, so space and speed is no problem. All the originals are available, so if you want any of the photos, just download them!

So for those reading, if you have images of 4x4Community events you are prepared to help me upload, please reply. I will work through and contact you via PM with the upload keys, as the I have to first ensure the galleries are there.

Threads and posts disappear, pictures are almost forever. I had a jol this week looking at old photos, our 2009 GTG at Gariep, MikeAG visiting us in JHB in 2009, our first birthday in PE in 2007 etc).

    Please reply with
Year / Month / Event so I can keep it structured.

You can also look in this RSS forum to see galleries added:

    What a great idea.
    Way to go, Dirk

So if I have a whole bunch of Lesotho photos from 2010, you could open a folder and I upload them for all to share?
Same for each event we have in the Southern Cape?

Oh, and it supports videos too, linking back to the forum and also has a stunning mobile website interface, so try it on your cell too!

    Yip same.

For both Southern Cape and Lesotho, please reply here with the month and what it was, and I will create the individual galleries and send the upload links via PM.

(Note, only categories and galleries with photos in will be shown, I have already created all the regions, but most are still empty.)

A bit more on how the display works.

Click on a category, then a sub category (year for example), you see a list of galleries.

Once you are viewing a gallery look on the top left bar, and you will notice a STYLE button.

If you click on it you have options:

    Smugmug
    Thumbnails
    Journal
    Slideshow

    Style Smugmug
This is usually the default. When you click on a photo it updates the larger photo on the right hand side. When you hover over the photo on the right you will notice another bar with more options to view larger etc.

    Style Thumbnails
The larger display image is now gone, and there are only thumbnails on the screen, in several pages. At the top is a small tickbox with "Show thumbnails in a single page". If you tick that the page will keep loading until all the thumbnails are loaded.

    Large view
For the above two styles, in style Smugmug click on the larger image on the right, in style Thumbnails click on the thumbnail. A larger image will appear over the rest, right a the top you have the scaling options, from S to O (for original), so you can view or download the largest image possible.

    Style Journal
This one is often the nicest, but very bandwidth intensive as it will load all the photos in large format in a single row.

    Style Slideshow
This one shows all the photos in a single row of thumbnails, and a larger image that will automatically refresh. You have the option to also view this full screen.

    Share options
Then there are also sharing options, to send an image via email, share to social media and so on.

Great facility Dirk, thank you !

I like the way that image size is left to the contributor and not fixed by an arbitrary limit on the site. Very few people are unable to easily view pictures 1000 pixels on the largest dimension nowadays. This can retain the impact of the picture.

Ok, Dirk we had a little event today at De Wildt. So as I understand you have to open a gallery for it and give us the code, then we can post our photos in it?

To answer Deon's question, yes all photos can be downloaded in any size, right up to the original uploaded.
