Compatible GPS units

I want to buy a second hand GPS unit for use with t4a mapset. Can anyone tell me if there is a comprehensive list of compatible units that I could refer to before committing. If not, can anyone suggest a mid range unit that has been tried and tested. Many thanks

Hi Peter,

T4A maps is Garmin compatible maps only. If you would like to purchase a new GPS, please see below:

Your GPS should have the following, to be compatible with our maps:

Garmin map capable
Must be able to receive maps (a SD card slot is not a requirement)
Must be able to take automotive maps.

Our maps doesn’t work with the Street Pilot series and Etrex 10.

I cannot recommend one, but the Nuvi series are more for city navigators and the Montana series are more off road tracking devices. It depends on what functions you want on the GPS unit.

Mandy, do you have any plans to expand the units that T4A will work on? For example I know that T4A now works on Caska units.

Surely there is a huge market to put T4A onto the standard Toyota/Land Rover etc Satnav units? I for one would be at the front on the queue to get T4A onto my Satnav without having to buy an expensive aftermarket Satnav or have a second GPS mounted in the car.

We are still working on the development for T4A to work on other in-car units. As you said, T4A is currently only working on the CASKA in-car units. Hopefully soon there will soon be more units that T4A will be compatible with.

Thanks for that info Mandy, it's good to hear that it should happen at some stage. I'm sure it will be worth you while if you do launch T4A on other in-car units. You can put my name down!

I was looking at a new Jeep Grand Cherokee at the dealers in Gaborone and noticed that the built-in maps don't have any coverage of Botswana at all. Nothing like paying P650 000 for a brand new luxury 4x4 to explore the wilds of Botswana and then having to buy a cheap GPS to stick to the window so that you can navigate.

Forgive my ignorance if this is a silly question but I have been looking at other after-market units to fit in my Land Cruiser. One I am looking at now (not Caska) uses Navteq maps. I understand that Garmin GPS's also use Navteq maps which incorporate some T4A data, although not the full version. Does this mean that the unit will also support the complete version of T4A or will I only be able to get the T4A info that comes already built into the Navteq maps?

The iGo SD Cards only works on the 2011 & later models, Kenwood in car navigation systems.

Just to clarify the different map entities. Navteq refers to the company who produces the data, similar to T4A producing data.

Compatibility of a map with hardware however does not depends on who produced/supplied the data but rather on the compiler used. For example, T4A maps are compiled into a Garmin compatible format for use on Garmin GPS units.

T4A maps are also compiled in iGO format to be used on certain in-car navigation systems, e.g. Caska.

When buying a in-car navigation system, always check if you can buy maps for it. They will tell you that it works with a whole lot of formats including iGO but what they do not tell you is that you need a specific software build for a particular type of unit. If you are lucky the T4A iGO SD cards we produce for Caska units may work on another type, but there is no guarantee since we only had Caska units to test them on.

....... amongst others. Can I however throw the cat amongst the pigeons. From my limited experience it seems that T4A seems to be downloadable to a number of different devices and most Garmins. Can I however ask what models are you in fact able to use ..... Sounds odd, what I mean is that I plot out a route on my computer on T4A and then download that route to my GPS, in other words use the programme. A friend has a Nuvi 200w which was able to take T4A easily BUT he could only load the programme, not actually plot and drive a route, it would simply display the entire road map as listed on T4A, pretty useless if you ask me. I have people cominig into my shop on a fairly regular basis and asking about it and quite honestly I don't have a clue.

The problem is not with the mapset, but rather the unit. The GPS unit can read the map and display the total map, but unit is not able to receive a route from ie Basecamp or Mapsource. In other words it is not 'programmable'.
I've got a Nuvi215w (display T4A only) and had to get Nuvi500 to program routes.
When a person buys a GPS he has to make sure that is it can handle routing. They are also more expensive than your base models.

As Prof said, it is not the map set but rather the GPS unit. It depends on which unit you have and if the unit can accept waypoints and routes. The best will be to have a look at the specs of the unit before purchasing a GPS unit. Not all the Garmin GPS units can accept routes and waypoints.
