Default Armed robbery at Riverwild Lodge - Mpumalanga

We decided to take a mini holiday between the 1st May & 5th May and booked accomodation at Riverwild Lodge - paid in full upfront. Upon our arrival on Wednesday the 1st May we seemed to have surprised the staff at Riverwild as no one was expecting us and apparently (Gideon) was in Mozambique. On the morning of Friday the 3rd at about 1:30am we we were woken up by a noise coming from the sliding door of our chalet. I went to investigate and surprised an intruder. I confronted him and he pulled a 9mm gun on me, luckily he did not pull the trigger. I immediately stepped back into our room. In a state of panic and scared that he or they (only saw one guy) would come in and hurt us, we waited defenseless for a short while. With no sign of the coward in the house, my wife and I immediately made a decision that we could not stay in the house with no one else around, total darkness outside and lack of cellphone coverage, we were in the "lion's den". We quickly briefed our two children (6 & 8 year old boys) that we would have to make a run for the Jeep about 20m away. We made it and drove to a hotel in Nelspruit. I have kept this story as short as possible as there are MANY MORE DETAILS to it and many unanswered questions - where was the security as we had left the house totally open with all our belongings, never saw the security guard from day one? According to the cleaning ladies he was supposed to be on duty from 7pm to 7am. On Friday morning when we drove back to fetch our clothes, bikes etc. at about 6:30am, I was told that he was sleeping We also found next to the chalet a garden pick as well as an axe to cut trees...not sure for what they were intended? The purpose of posting this thread is to inform and warn fellow members to be extra carefull when out in the bush by yourselves, God was with us that night.

Nogmals jammer oor julle slegte ondervinding.

I agree, Riverwild is a beautiful place with lots of outdoor activities and the kids absolutely loved to go 4x4 trailing and on their quads in the mud holes. What a pity that our experience was a bad one. Gideon did call me on the morning after the incident apologizing and saying that he would refund us for the 2 nights that we did not sleep there.

As mens daaroor dink, dit kan eintlik maar enige plek gebeur.
Maar dit sal wel 'n goeie ding wees as hulle bietjie hulle sekuriteid opknap.

We can't even go on holiday anymore without having to watch our backs - this sounds crazy but we don't go anywhere even Kruger Park without our firearms... sad but true in this country you need to be prepared... for anything.... anywhere.... anytime
