Default 2.2 4y motor in tata

My grandad put a 2.2 motor in his tata ,one of those 1st ones , but its supposed to be diesel motor , that's what the gearing is set for , how much does a diff for that motor cost , or can I change some gears on the diff of the tata , basically was a diesel which broke at 20k crank shaft snapped etc ... Now has a 2.2 4y motor in but nothing else was changed .... The guy that did it took the money and ducked before finishing so I'm trying to help my grandad out

I would not change the diff.
The TATA diesel and the 4Y has almost the same power curves so it should have good power but it will be more thirsty.
The one thing that will improve is that now there will be no turbo lag

Yeah, I agree, you dont need to change the diff - at least, there is something now on the tata that wont break

    Agreed. Leave that diff.

I have a Tata with a 2.4d Toyota engine. Actually a very nice bakkie now.

Eish but that thing is thirsty and slow... Or is that the nature of the motor ? Need to fiddle with the carb maybe ....revs at 4-4500 at 120....

4500rpm at 120km/h is a bit much.. my 4y does 4000rpm at about 130km/h.. 4Y's aren't built to rev high and are limited to 5500rpm..

If it is running around 6km/l (14l/100km) then it is still in the ball park.. A replacement diff from Gearmax is in the order of R4500.00 before fitment. Do you know what ratio it is running now? What size wheels does the vehicle have, you can easily bring down the rpm with bigger wheels.

    Is that a Toyota gearbox?

Make sure that speedo is accurate. Mine is way out.

Mine is a recon box and quite accurate due to the increase in tyre size.. Runs within 1-2km/h from the GPS.

Batman the figures you gave does not make sense.
I had one of the first tata Telcolines and in 5 th gear it did 3400 rpm .

That is spot on for the 4Y motor .

Was the gearbox changed with the motor or did you keep the TATA box?

Sorry for the late reply, will a 4y really get such bad economy?

Most petrol motors do badly in pickups, nature of the beast.. I had mine swapped over to a Weber carb and best was 8km/l.. Later I changed it to fuel injection and it stayed at around 8km/l..

Sad thing is most guys with well tuned V8's get in the order of 7km/l too..

Look at the 3RZ motor, 2.7l from Toyota, 7-8km/l is good ball park consumption..

Kit a pickup for long distances, 4x4 or towing and you are looking at 5-6km/l from petrol models..

New engine should rev the same as the old one at the same speeds if only the engine was changed. 6-7.5km/l sounds about right. A 2.2 venture worked out to about 6-7.5 on the open road.
I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

I WONDER IF YOU CAN TOW WITH A 4Y SETUP . I ALSO HAVE A 207 TELCOLINE DOUBLE CAB WITH NO ENGINE , BUT THE 2.O TDI GEARBOX AND DIFF ARE STILL INTACT . WOULD LIKE TO TRY TOW IN . SO HAVE TO DECIDE BETWEEN FORD V6 , 2.2 4Y OR MAYBE 3.5 BENZ V8 . IF I KNOW THE 4Y CAN TOW , I'D GO FOR IT . CHEAP MAINTAINANCE . BUT DON'T WANNA VERKRAG THE ENGINE . BENZ V8 GAS POWER , BUT MAINTAINANCE AND FUEL . AGE ALSO .
