Bit the bullet. Towed without the license without any issues. Actually got pulled over 3 times on our way to Komati, and not one officer picked it up.

Did the test in January, passed, and now need to pick up my license card. At least its done and I don't have to do it again!
Just got my EB, such a frustrating process.

At the end of the day we only do it for insurance purposes. The driving schools and traffic officials are clueless. Told me C1 will cover everything, even EB.

Everyone just remember, you need the “E” to tow. C1 or C wont help you.

Do the EC. It covers the EB and in my opinion much easier. I could not find any driving school that offered proper EB services. I did 6 lessons for EC without any prior experience and passed.

Just passed my EB this morning after failing the first time.

    My views :

    1. You will need to do the full learners etc over again, there is no shortcut
    2. Find a driving school that has a dedicated EB instructor
      1. I used a guy who said he was competent with the EB for my first one and failed horribly as he gave me totally incorrect information and advice on procedure etc
      2. I then found Henri from Alpha Bestuurskool and he was AMAZING, he truly knows his stuff and worked in the Traffic Dept for a long time, so he knows exactly what to do and look out for.

    3. You can do the EB or EC, but the EC is very tricky, getting that Horse and Trailer into the 3.5m Alley Docking takes a lot of practice, not to mention the cost of doing the EC is more than double due to the hiring charges etc
    4. The toughest part of the EB is the observations, especially as an experienced drive, you spend most of the time looking around instead of the road, you need to unlearn a lot of your bad habits.
    5. I did 3 lessons of an hour and then a 2hr lesson before the test, all in all, it cost me R1650 and i am now legal

So happy it finally done and dusted and i can relax

Just made a booking for my EB learners.... feels almost as if I'm 18 again, just without the six pack

Can anyone recommend a good reputable driving school in Pta/Centurion please?

Wait until you sit down with the bunch of 17 year olds. THEN you feel old.

    Good luck with the process.

Just remember at most of the stations the learners has changed from the old 3 paper tests to a new online test, so confirm this first. Earlier on this post someone directs you to getyourlearners.co.za. This site is still based on the old paper tests. I only studied the site and did all the questions, but still failed. Only by one mark, but a fail is a fail

So my tip on the learners is get a driving school that can assist/help you to prep for the online test.

Thanks for the tips. I've bough a new K53 book (more like a magazine in look and feel) and also got a K53 learner's app by Random House Struik that has some very nice test features.

Good info thanks. We have a Jurgens XT120 kitted. The trailer GVM is 500kg which enables me to tow it and what I have been doing is packing most of my heavies in the Disco 3 and all the light stuff in the Jurgens. I then take the trailer to a weigh bridge...and the GVM then sits on 735 odd kg. I know more or less what to pack where. I then keep this document in my cubbie proving weight with photos on weigh bridge. This is purely if I get stopped or in a accident to prove my insurance that I am legal within 750kg. Might sound like a schlep but we only three and the disco ample enough space for gear bags and luggage. So for now until I am going serious travel and packing. I am running as is.....If all els fails Swambo has code C1.

All seems good and fine proving the trailer is below 750kg. The Disco3 probably has a GVM > 1500kg.
Your comment on SWAMBO having a C1 as a back-up plan (in case the trailer goes over the weight) is incorrect though due to 2 reasons: Firstly, above 750kg the trailer must have assisted braking. Secondly, a C1 is not an EC1. Having a C1 also only allows you to tow a trailer of 750kg. To tow bigger trailers you need EB, EC1, or EC.

    Hope this helps.

I can't remember for the learners but definitely for the drivers. They do the test at the station. It's the same as when you renew your drivers license.

Yes, I recently did my learners in order to go for an EB. I renewed my B and A drivers licence card and the person doing the eye tests had to make a note or give me another document (cannot exactly recall which) before I could make the appointment to ‘click’ away for a learners (computer based test for the learners).

Shine The Way in, based in Milnerton would be my bet. I decided to rather do EC, it worked out to maybe R1000 more and i bit more sweating bullets trying to alley dock the trailer, but at least I will never need another license again.

I got my EB license yesterday, I used Henri at Alpha Driving school in Brackenfell.
The entire process from getting my learners and then completing the test took just less than a month.
Henri provided me with more than sufficient training and tips.
Now I can legally tow my Trailvan!
