    Don't forget the left turn...

Did my EC on Saturday at Krugersdorp. From doing the booking for the Learners to doing the actual Practical Drivers was less than 2 weeks.

Only downside about an EC is that it is more expensive to do the training and the truck, but that compares little to the fact that I never need to do a licence again. (Except for bikes)

Also, something that has changed recently I believe, is that you are only allowed to get 20 penalty points. Previously it was 50. So the more maneuvers you need to do in the yard (EB vs EC), the more likely it is that you will fail. 1 missed observation is 5 penalty points.

To do your EC will set you back about R3k, 4 hours training, with 1 hour on the day of the test. That is if you don't have any experience driving a truck. Obviously depending on where you go.

For those that is wondering, EC is also better than a EC1.

And, if you get a C1, or a C, it does not include the EB. Even some officials are somewhat confused about that. They almost had me do a C1, because they thought I would qualify for a EB by default.

    Hi Veldjakkals

I am in a similar position - one of the poor sods who needs to redo his licence because I only got issued with an code B in 1998. I actually only realised this problem the other day, even though I have been towing off-road trailers and horse trailers for more than 10 years.

Anyway, I need to redo my licence. To clarify, if I follow what you did and do the EC licence, will I be covered for a standard vehicle towing >750kg trailer as well as driving trucks, etc. , or will I still need to do the EB licence as well (sorry, I didn't quite understand this from your post).

Thanks for the help, have been trying to get this answered for ages.

    Cheers

    James

Does anyone know if my current B license has no auto-only restriction, but I use my auto vehicle to "upgrade" to EB, will my EB restrict me to driving auto-only?

Yes, EB will be Auto restricted if you do the test in Auto.

When you do the EB will your B still be valid?

Say for some strange reason you fail the EB test?

Sadly not. You only need pdp for C or C1 goods vehicles .

You need the E to tow a trailer over 750kg...

So I went to make my appointment for my learners this morning in Durbanville. They tried to convince me that I should go for my C licence and that it covers EB. My understanding is that EC covers EB but C does not cover EB. Am I correct?

Yes you are right. The system is a nightmare.

I don't know how many customers I gave a trailer because I was also under
the impression that C or C1 includes EB, but it actually does not.

I made myself a table here at this thread that shows whats covered and what not.

But I can add that also here:

Passed my EB today. It was a quick process (2-3 weeks) at the KwaMhlanga (Mpumulanga) testing station. It is about an hour's drive from Pretoria. Dan from Dan's Driving School took me through the whole thing and supplies a trailer for training and test. 0829057867.

Test was alley dock, hill start, straight reverse and left turn with trailer; parallel parking without trailer. Road test with trailer. I don't anticipate ever needing do drive anything over 3500kg so did not do EC. EB package is half the price (if using own vehicle).

Nope, I borrowed a manual Colt so as not to be restricted to auto. Still, parallel parking a long bakkie takes some concentration... Ideal would be something smaller with a hook.

That is my problem. The Navara is very big to parallel park. But finding a small manual with a towball isn't easy. How I now miss my dad's 1991 Ford Sierra...

I also just passed my EB yesterday after not managing to find the patience or time (hectic year) to get it done all year. My Conqueror Conquest bought in January can now be used properly and we already are planning a KTP trip early in January.

I drove with a friend's Ford Kuga and used my Conqueror for the test. My auto Pathfinder will tow the trailer nicely but I didn't want to be restricted to the Auto license (and I didn't want to attempt to parallel the Pathy). The Kuga 1.6Turbo did very well with the trailer, and also was a dream to parallel park.

Was a VERY quick process in Secunda.
    21 Oct - applied for Learner's
    23 Oct - wrote and passed Learner's
27 Oct - made appointment for EB practical
4 Nov - passed EB practical

I paid for 2 lessons with Andre from Secunda Driving School who was very helpful in explaining the whole process and getting me up to speed with the K53 observations in no time.

He said that in our area the guys usually rent a 760kg braked small trailer from our local trailer agency in Trichardt and then do the test with his Tazz that has a towbar.

Wat behels die werftoets alles vir die EB lisensie?

    Terugstoot in 'n reguitlyn?
    Gangparkering met 'n wa?
    Parallel sonder 'n wa?

Where in Roodepoort/Krugersdorp would be the best place to go for the EB license? Any good Driving Schools that can used for 1 lesson or so?
