Default 2010 Jurgens Explorer II wood rot

Bought my Explorer II brand new in March 2010. Had all the regular services and is well looked after. I keep it outside but under a caravan cover.

Now I have wood rot in the front storage compartment - floor is really bad and the sides have rot in them as well in the front corner. There must be a leak somewhere (from the top) and it has just soaked up into the sides. Its with the agents now. Whilst I was there I saw a 2011 Explorer with even worse rot than mine but in the section where the main bed is. These vans are just made with simple shutter ply so not very water friendly.

Has anyone else had problems with rot in their Explorers? I cannot believe a 3 year old van has rot so early in it life.

5 years, not a trace and no leaks. Leaks can be a killer.

I told them to find the leak before they strip & replace. Else it will just rot again

Our normal caravaan picked up woodrot in DBN while in CPT no issues.
Seems the weather here loves wood.
Started at the bottom/floor and worked it self up.

After this I think I am going to keep it in a garage or at least under a carport. Where I stay in Durban it is 'dampish' which may have contributed to the problem.

After seeing how these vans are put together, I keep mine in a garage to keep it dry. The only water it sees is if we go camping with it.

Someone told me some time ago that caravan covers are bad news and may cause wood rot due to the vans sweating. I also use a cover but it does make sense to a degree. Now I am even more nervous of putting my cover on.

    Come to think of it.
In CPT the caravaan was mostly under a roof, here in DBN no roof and we got a cover.
What worried me is the rot was at the bottom, nothing at the top.
Partly repaired and sold as a caravan with wood rot - the guy was quite happy to take it.

    Most definitely...

also consider the amount you are paying...
These are expensive items you buy and then leave outside in the rain/damp..

my advise to anyone purchasing a caravan... put it in a garage

UPDATE - Jurgens have agreed to fix it. So its going back to the factory in Pretoria. I am impressed that they have agreed to fix it out of warranty but will also request that they find the source of the water ingress. Another section of rot was found on the lower RHS rear - right behind the wheel - the section that slopes up to the rear.

Another update. Jurgens gave me a 2011 demo model. Has the new LED lights and the side awning that does not decapitate me. They moved all my mods (shelves, tow-hitch, 2nd battery, extra plugs) over to the replacement van. Very chuffed with the service from Jurgens and Natal Caravans

Wow, that's fantastic. It's good to see that they take ownership of the lack of quality in models built around 2010 (and some 2011 flow overs)

My first post so G'day all. I have exactly the same problem with my 2010 Explorer (Stargazer here in Oz). I need to replace the compartment floor and the right hand wall. I contacted Jurgens here and basically they weren't interested. They told me they were a factory and didn't do repairs. They did give me the name of a repairer though, but it took a phone call and two emails just to get a response out of them. Looking at my rot I don't think its coming in from the top. My rotten wall is very spongy and wet at the bottom and is still OK at the top. I cut out a chunk of the floor and I've noticed there is a gap between the front bottom moulding of the compartment and the chequerplate compartment base. There's not a great deal of glue holding the floor to the base so there's no real sealing of the base. I reckon the water just wicks up the sidewalls from the bottom when the van is towed in wet weather. I'd be interested to know what Jurgens reckons the source of your leak is.

I also noticed that my tail lights were filling up with water. When I popped one out I found that the fibreglass moulding that extends across the back of the van that houses the lights was full of water. I've fixed this by drilling 1.5mm holes in the flat sections underneath the reflectors. The tail lights are supposed to be sealed but I think water gets in through the plug.

Great service you got from Jurgens Oilrag.... After having wood rot removed from my Sprite SuperSport a good couple of years ago and seeing what the van is actually made of, I promised myself I would never again buy a van where wood is used in any part of the construction. I then promptly bought a brand new all metal Commander back in 2007. It did not take me long to realise this was not the answer either and had quite a bit of maintenance on my hands in the 4 years that followed up to mid 2011...

The last 2.5 years has been pure bliss....

According to Jurgens it was more than just my front compartment that was rotten. There was also 1 wall as well. But they never said where the water was coming from.

Based on feedback from other caravan owners and Natal Caravans, part of my problem with the rot was probably related to my use of the caravan cover. It retains moisture and becomes like a wet sauna during summer. It may be better to leave the cover off or as I will now do - garage the van. I was also amazed at the amount of good old shutterply being used to construct caravans (most of the SA based models).

Hi guys, I have an 09 Explorer (Stargazer in Australia) and have wood rot in the front compartment walls and the floor underneath the slide out fridge closest to the door. I'm not sure what the best thing is to do - should I get it taken out and replaced by a caravan repair shop? Do you think it will continue to spread? The van is always shedded not covered so shouldn't sweat. It did get used in major rain event in September so wondering if there could be a leak somewhere - can't find it though! Would love any feed back.
