    Default Approaching Lusaka

If anyone is driving to or from Livingstone to Lusaka add, another 2 hours to your plans... major roadworks (good) between Kafue town and Lusaka, took us 2 hours to get through and that's at 0630,

Thanks for this. Are they planning to make this road a dual line highway?

The same applies if you are approaching Lusaka from Kariba.

Yes, I beleive they are planning to make it dual carriage way. Shame they cant fill in some potholes on the Munali-Mazabuka section at the same time!

    Default Roads

Hey don't complain... Kasama to Ndole Bay is 350km, and it only takes 8 hours... worth every bump though...

I am asking this for a friend that will be going from Mana pools to Puku Pan: I assume the only way is via Lusaka then Mumbwa and then down the road to IT?
Is there any road that skips the Kafue town to Lusaka stetch? I see there is some sort of track going right just before Chirundu heading to Chaiwa and the turning sharp north west toward Lusaka?

That road from chirundu to chaiwa is known as the escarpment road and brings you out at the Leopards Hill Rd in Lusaka. I haven't personally been on it for a few years and don't know the present conditions; I will make some enquiries. I have heard that it is also one of the roads that is due to be upgraded to tar in the near future.

I have just had confirmation that this rd is now being worked on by the chinese, so I can't imagine it being much fun to travel on!!

The detour added nearly 3hrs extra additional last Friday when I drove down to SA due to trucks with our new mining equipment blocking the road. I will post a photo when I am back in Zambia.

Lekhubu, there is no real alternative. Leopards Hill Road has always been a bit of a challenge in it self. Best is not not listen to music like Meatloaf's BAT OUT OF HELL but nice softly played baroque music to calm you down.

Thanks Bertie, I will pass the info on to him. He is not much of a Meat Loaf guy but I am Luckily we are not doing that road on this trip.

The other alternative he mentioned is going over at Kariba border post, but from what I can see that road also joins the Chirundu - Lusaka road at some point?

The big problem is at Kafue town towards Lusaka. Not sure what is happening after the turnoff to Livingstone towards Chirundu.....have not been on that road recently.
