Default Land Rover Freelander II 2.2 TD4 Auto gearbox problem

    Hello All,
This is my first 'real' post so I hope I've got it in the right section and all!

I am hoping that some of the more technical people out there can put my mind at ease regarding a problem I have with the auto gearbox on my Freelander 2.

I bought the vehicle only a couple of weeks ago (it's a 2007 model with 110k on the clock). I was on my way home from the dealership and feeling very pleased with myself when on a steep incline on the motorway when the car changed down it 'missed' the gear, like a false neutral. The revs obviously shot up but once they settled down again the gearbox found the right gear and we carried on. It did the same at lower revs on the side roads when changing up but with more of a judder or a knock as the drive train tried to catch up with whatever the gearbox was doing! It was also quite erratic, behaving quite normally and changing very smoothly at other times.

I called the dealership (non-franchised dealer) the next morning and advised them that I was returning the car. They connected their diagnostic macine to check for any error messages but there were none. The dealership was quite convinced that it was a minor electronic issue and they reset whatever it is they reset with the diagnostic machine but in the end it didn't really make much difference and I advised the dealership accordingly.

Before taking it back to the dealership for the second time I popped in to the local Land Rover workshop and asked them to check if all the transmission software upgrades had been done (found this info on a UK forum). They confirmed that they had but reset everything and after test driving the car advised me that it needed a new gearbox!

I returned the car to the dealership and they have been very accomodating and cooperative. I am not exactly sure where they sent the car except that it is at a "Land Rover specialist" and the diagnosis is that it is nothing serious, just an electrical fault whereby the wrong message is being sent to the gearbox, or something along those lines! It has been there for 7 working days now but I am hoping to get it back tomorrow.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with the Freelander 2 auto box and is the above diagnosis correct or am I the hole for a new or recon gearbox?

Thanks and my apologies for the lengthy post!
    John

What was the outcome of all of this? I experienced something similar with my FL2, but this happened when under load (towing a caravan). Keen to know if you got it resolved.

This thread/post is over 6 years old!

Would be nice to know what the outcome was if the member is still active on forum...
