I'm busy designing (joke!) a drawer system for the Disco. Gave up on trying to build the drawers to fit ammo boxes as I find them a v awkward size. Decided now to build the drawer system which will basically be two drawers as large as possible to fit the load bay (one above the other), onto which I can put various sized boxes and cooler boxes. I'll post some pictures when thinking becomes reality!

It seems the most of us have the 'Big Four' ammo boxes or similar - Kitchen, Recovery, Accessories(pegs, hammers etc) and a Pantry. That is, we all carry the same K.R.A.P. :-)
I have two extra boxes one for wine and an electrickery box. The electrickery box might interest some of you. Inside it has a 30AH 12V battery (about three times the size of a burglar alarm battery). Some strip LEDs on long leads, mains 'blue' adaptors and extension leads. A small inverter that can just charge a camera or laptop. air mattress pump, torches and anything else electrical that will fit.
On the outside of the ammo box, mounted in the recessed parts, are "cigar' sockets, Hella sockets, Brad Harrison plugs, USB out for iPhones etc. and a fixed 5 led strip (very useful when you turn up on a site at night!). There are also a few switches to turn all the sockets on and off. This box lives next to our camp bed (as a side table) and any 12v accessories, lights, etc just plug into it. It can even hold the fridge for a while if needed. I've never had to charge it while we have been away but if I did I can just plug it into the system on the car. Next project is an off road wine rack.

Depends on the need for self sufficiency. I'm currently preparing for a 10 week trip and will be heavier loaded than most guys on a 10 day or 2 week trip.

Firstly. I have found that most of the ready made drawer systems are not space efficient. As a result I had a flat 6x Wolfpack (not Gomo) system custom made to fit my bakkie. It left enough space in the front to install a 50L water tank. Two aux batteries, AC-DC charger and DC-DC charger over the wheel arches.

On the roof rack I carry spade, HL Jack, 2nd spare wheel and 4x jerry cans and gas bottle.

We are just two people travelling, so I have removed the rear seat of the double cab and have fitted 2x fridge/freezer that allows me to gain access by just having the rear windows opened. No slider system needed.

Break down (for this long trip)
    Drawer system:-
    1. Recovery gear
    2. Tools
    3. Booze
    4. Food
    5. Groceries
    6. Kitchen ware
5 & 6 are closest to the front for easy access, recovery gear and tools at the back as recovery/breakdown situations hopefully less frequent

The remainder of the stuff goes on top of the drawer system in the load bay. This is mainly all the stuff that I unpack at camp (I use a ground tent).

    6x High Ammo boxes
    1. Braai stuff
    2. Brickets (for areas where wood is difficult to obtain)
    3. Sleeping bag
    4. Sleeping bag
    5. Odds and ends
    6. Odds and ends

    2x Gomo boxes
    1. Electrical cable (camps with power points and cable for solar panel)
    2. Odds and ends

Add to this the following that also goes into the load bay:-
    2x chairs
    2x tables
    1x gazebo
    1x tent
    1x 120W portable solar panel
    1x pump

This is maybe over the top for a weekend out, if that is all you want to do

Without the packing system I usually use about 4:

    1) Recovery gear & pump
    2) Kitchen
    3) Food
    4) Camping gear (torches, hammer, pegs and all the other small odds and ends)

What other interesting/worthwhile items have you made space for in your packing system?

Been there, done that. Finally got fed up with unpacking, moving the one box to get to the things I needed, etc. So installed drawer system and pack as much in the two drawers and only take boxes for bulk supplies if really required.

In addition to the drawer system in the photo, I add my Fridge, and if longer trip two amo boxes for supplies, on the right. Then two larger boxes for clothing on the left and a rooftop for accommodation. This is about my max configuration including 60l diesel and 40l water.

With this configuration we unpack the minimum, maybe chairs and table. My rule now is that everything must be in reach without moving anything else.

I use smaller water and diesel containers, this way I have options depending on the trip. If water and diesel is available I don't need to take all of the containers, or only take one or two depending on the requirement.

Here's a pic of my very diy bak. When the canopy was fitted I had to remove the roll bar. Put in two pieces of angle iron in their place using the bolts. I use them as fridge tie downs/ other. Perhaps pics would do it more justice:

As you can see I'm not too handy lol. It is quite functional though and has added a relative amount of convenience from a packing perspective. Cost me about R200 including the drill bit.

Plans have however changed slightly as I will be doing a canopy as soon as I get back from holiday. So the system will now have to compliment the canopy

My wife discovered that ammo boxes are the way to go for clothes instead of bags or suitcases. Due to the shape and solidity, there is less chance of making a mess of the packing when working from the box. I agree with her and now we have 7 boxes for our trip to Kgalagadi on 27 September
