If they go to Mars in a serious manner they have to have permanent base in the Moon, mining in the asteroid belt and industrial operations either on the moon or in space... "Printing" technologies to make parts from raw materials is about must. No good to have a milling machine trying to make parts. Gravity well from earth is too much without space lift.

I assume Elon has thought all of that

If you look at this footage via the link -it looks very much like a delta-wing-drone dressed in tin foil!

    In the thread:

There is the first link I have seen for some pricing. I am sure that it is a bit more in the beginning but will drop. The big potential problem are regulators. If Elon drops the cost then companies like MTN and Vodacom will scream murder and ask protection. The first low flying telephone satellites were never used. It was too early and state monopolies banned their use.

What countries like China, Russia, Iran, North Korea will do? Equipment can be smuggled and no state control.

Finally stuck the landing with SN15 -(with just a little fire afterwards!)

Amazing progress and won't be long before Starship gets to orbit and Moon!

    https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-57004604
Step by step, the SpaceX company is progressing the development of its novel Starship rocket.

The latest prototype, Serial Number 15 (SN15), has just completed a successful high-altitude ascent and landing.

The four previous test artefacts all ran into trouble as they went through their touchdown manoeuvres, ultimately destroying themselves in the process.

But SN15 had no such difficulty, making a tidy, controlled return to the ground at SpaceX's R&D facility in Texas.

A small fire licked around the base of the vehicle on touchdown but was soon extinguished.

There's considerable interest in the Starship concept now that the American space agency (Nasa) has chosen it to land astronauts on the Moon later this decade.

Now Bezos is appealing this decision and stalling the only realistic project at this time.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/26/s...ue-origin.html

-in parallel he's quickly announced he's going to launch humans into space on BlueOrigin..(.....just barely though)........for an expensive fairground joyride.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-57000820

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos is now ready to take people into space.

The US entrepreneur's Blue Origin company says it will launch a crew aboard its New Shepard rocket and capsule system on 20 July.

The astronauts are likely to include company personnel, but one seat is being auctioned online.

New Shepard's flights are sub-orbital. They're designed to take passengers on a straight up-and-down trip that briefly goes above 100km (62 miles).

This is the so-called Kármán Line, which has been designated by broad international agreement as the starting point of space.

"Only 569 people have ever been over the Kármán Line. With our New Shepard vehicle, we're about to change that and change it dramatically," said Ariane Cornell, Blue Origin's director of astronaut sales.

She declined to comment on whether Mr Bezos himself might be on the 20 July flight.

Let's see if Bezos has the (Blue) balls to ride on his own rocket.

He's so far behind in development -(and much more expensive than SpaceX )-that it will take many years/decades for BlueOrigin to be a real contender for the space industry -if ever.

Austin, Texas (CNN Business)Blue Origin — after spending more than six years developing its space tourism rocket, New Shepard — has finally set a date for its first commercial passenger mission, July 20, and announced that one of the first passengers will be the winner of an online auction.

Anyone can place a bid on the company's website, according to a tweet posted Wednesday morning. The first round of bidding will run from May 5 to 19, and the bids will be sealed, meaning nobody will be able to see how much other people offered. An unsealed round of bidding will begin May 19, and finally a live auction on June 12 will conclude the contest.

Chinese in 'control' of their rockets and bits

    https://www.businessinsider.co.za/trending/chinese-rocket-debris-reenters-atmosphere-lands-in-the-indian-ocean-2021-5

    • An uncontrolled Chinese rocket reentered Earth's atmosphere and landed in the Indian Ocean Saturday.
    • The rocket had been hurtling towards Earth for a week, with no one knowing when or where it would land.
    • The landing quelled fears that debris from the rocket might have fallen on people or property.

A Chinese rocket falling toward earth at around 29,000 kilometres an hour reentered Earth's atmosphere late Saturday, landing in the Indian Ocean near the Maldives, China's space agency reported, according to the South China Morning Post.
It was the 22.5-ton core stage of China's Long March 5B rocket, which launched the first module of the country's new space station on 28 April. For the last week, the 10-story-tall cylinder was hurtling around Earth uncontrolled, losing altitude with each lap. No space agency was certain when it would fall or where it would land.
Although the rocket stage ultimately landed in the ocean, there was a small chance it could have rained more than 5 tons of debris onto unsuspecting people or property.

As the rocket stage fell through Earth's atmosphere, friction likely heated the surrounding air to more than 1,600 degrees Celsius. The rocket stage likely fell apart in this heat and most likely burned up. But experts stressed that some parts could come through the heat intact.
The general rule of thumb is that 20% to 40% of a large object's mass will survive its fall through the atmosphere. In this case, that would be 5 to 9 metric tons of debris.

    Meanwhile......-SpaceX SN15 landed about 15/20m ( 2 or 3 times it's footprint) off target

Musk killed it on SNL, by the looks of the intro!

Hope to find full episode online.

-quite refreshing to have a real mensch ( also human?) as the driver in some of the world's science/engineering/manufacturing success stories in industry- not another typical Grey Man type Captain of Industry leeching off the manipulated mass market for success.

Some people get so worked up in their arguments that they loose their sense of humor. Or maybe they had none to start with.

Fantastic 4k slow-mo and real-time footage from numerous angles- and sound!

Kudos to the all RocketHeads who set up these amazing shots, and stream them.

That sight of SN15 dropping out of the clouds as it does the flip (2'40") to vertical is incredible!

I'm amazed they are achieving such responsive gimballing of the engines and such accurate landings, with just a dustcloud, and little else drama!

I guess they need to get even more accurate if SpaceX hope to reliably catch them on a big springy sideways U-cradle thingy!
