Default Komatipoort, Bilene route - avoiding Maputo

Huge excitement with our Moz trip just around the corner. Come Sat 9 March, the Pajero will stick her nose in the general direction of Moz for a much needed break.

A quick question to all the seasoned overlanders on this forum. If possible I would like to avoid Maputo. We will be entering via the Lebombo/Komatipoort border control.

The plan at the moment is to turn onto the 251 from the EN4 to Moamba. Then onto the 570 and then the 405.

The 405 becomes the 204 which then joins the EN1.

From the EN1 we will head to Bilene.

Any advice on road conditions or alternative routes would be much appreciated. I would really like to avoid the Maputo chaos if at all possible.

    Thanks in advance.

Sorry off topic from the OP, but what sort of congestion could we expect at the Komatipoort border post?
The plan is to cross on Saturday morning 9 March. Am I being optimistic in my thinking that it might be a bit quieter as it is "pre-Easter" or should I plan on getting there as early as possible?

I am also planning on doing that route on the 21st of March - will you please report on the road when you get back?

Hope you travel safe and enjoy your holiday!

Hi there. Well, we generally cross the border around 03:00 in the morning, given the border is open at that time. This way we almost always afoid traffic and reach the better "areas" as the sun is rising. I wanted to go on the same route when we went january but I took my friend with, who is in a wheelchair, and he wanted to see Maputo. Enjoy.

Where in Bilene are you guys going?

Beach Camp Bilene. Bilene is just a stop-over for day 1.

We will be moving onwards to Inhambane on Sunday where we will spend most of our break (Morrungulu Bay and Palm Grove Lodge).

I may be wrong but you will only exit before xai xai if you use that route. Than you have to drive back to Bilene.
