    Default Marakele - Pictures!!

So we're off to Marakele in a few weeks and I recall there was a section of road with some axle breaker potholes just before Thabazimbi on the R511.

    Is this still the case?

Should I rather take the N1 to Bella-Bella and then west on the R516? Will this cut out the bad section or not?

The last alternative is to drive via Rooiberg but a large section on this road seems to be gravel and I have no idea what condition it's in.

    Any help would be appreciated.

The road around Bela Bela is more than 100km longer. So I took everyone advice in January and took that one.

When we came back I thought to myself, no way I gonna go around extra 100km again. So I took the Brits road. And the road was all good just up to Brits 20km bad.

So thats it, 20km bad road just before Brits coming from Thabazimbi in January this year.

Bad enough but not that bad if you take it slow. I went trough it with my trailer and no problem. Just take it easy, when you come from Brits and you hit the railroad crossing its over.

    Thanks for the information!

Via Bella-Bella is about 60 km longer for me so I'll take my chances on the Brits road.

Did you guys have Rhinos in the camp during the night?

Yip, and when you go into the main camp stick around the area where the tented camp is, that were we found the elephants. There is one or two small roads marked for 4x4 in that area take them, the elephants hang around there.

    Good day,

The sort of bad piece of road is just after Atlanta, but if you take it slow ( 80 -100kph ) until you crossed the river, you will be fine!

If you go trough Bela-Bela, you will cut out this bad section.

When is your trip to Marakele? It is very hot here in Thaba, 40 degrees at this moment ( 18H00 ).

We've been there a couple of times but we've never been that lucky. We've only seen them at the waterhole.

Miskien slaap jy dalk te lekker in die aand? Baie keer kom hulle in so na 11uur.

Kom ons hou duim vas dat dit teen daai tyd al koeler is!

Gelukkig koel dit meer af in die aand by Marakele as in die dorp. Dit bly maar warm hier tussen die ysterberge.

    Geniet dit!

I am off to Marakele later today, looks like from Centurion its almost the same distance either way (Bella bella vs Brits/Thabazimbi).

What will be the shorter route time-wise?
