Default What engine for a LT95

    Good day all.

I need some advice. Has anyone successfully put another (than the 3.5l V engine in front of a LT95 gearbox in a Range Rover Classic?

Will it be reliable enough for overlanding if I change the engine?

Arguably the strongest gearbox ever installed in a Landy.

BUT PARTS ARE GETTING SCARCE. Rebuilds might soon be impossible.

The Ozzies put the 4BD1T 3.9L Turbo diesel in front of these boxes and they last 100,000kms between rebuilds.

My advice is stick with OEM if you go large turbo diesel or V8.

    Thanks Jelo, i appreciate it.

I am leaning towards sticking to OEM (which i suppose means "Original Equipment Manufactured")

Do you maybe know of any upgrades for the 3.5 V8? I heard that you can put a 3.9 cam shaft in, that will better performance and fuel consumption.

I already changed my points in the distributor to electronic. I want to build an overlanding vehicle with it.

The best bet would be a 4.6 conversion but yes, the 3.9 Discovery cam is a good option.

You've done the electronic ignition, now I would go for fuel injection.

The EFI manifolds from the 3.9 engines are cheap enough.

    You then need:

    - hi pressure fuel pump
    - Spitronics EFI controller or an Original Equipment GEMS controller (I'd use spitronics because you can have the option of tuning the fuel AND the ignition timing using sensors of your choice)

Several guys on the forum have converted their 3.5 V8s to EFI with great results in power and economy.

Okay, that sounds pretty good. Does the 4.6 engine fit straight onto the LT95 gearbox? If not, I’d rather go for the fuel injection on the 3.5.

Do you know of a place that does these upgrades? It sounds a bit complicated for a DIY.

yes the 4.6 is exactly the same block as the 3.5

Look around your area for a Landy independent workshop, they will be able to do the work for you and not tell you it cannot be done.....
