    Surrounds:
The emphasis at Ithala is more on game viewing than on 4x4ing, but the reserve's two trails offer plenty of fun. It's a best-kept secret, so you're unlikely to be crowded.
    The trail:
The game reserve offers two trails exclusively for the use of 4x4s. While the emphasis is more on game viewing, the trails do offer plenty of excitement. The Bivane trail requires low range and has a number of easy stream crossings, provided the rainfall hasn't been too high, while 4x2s can take the Nce Nce trail, which is more of a scenic off-road game drive. Park rangers are happy to accompany vehicles along the trail and their keen eyes and familiarity with the area ensure that no wildlife goes unnoticed.
    Accommodation:
There's beautifully rustic accommodation, exclusive to you when you book the trail and a variety of self-catering chalets.
    Camping:
    Campsites available.

    ko÷rdinate: -28.775000, 29.945860

    Route distance:
    Up to 200km | 10 - 12 hours
    Surrounds:
The Stoney Ridge Off-road Academy is essentially a training venue, but the trails are of a far higher standard than one normally finds at such a facility.
    The trail:
Because most of the trails are guided, they can be tailored to suit all experience levels, time constraints and all types of vehicles, while invariably placing an emphasis on relaxed family fun for outdoor enthusiasts. There are six trails. Five are 4x4 trails, and one is for 4x2s with diff lock. The trails wind through 2 400 ha of scenic indigenous bushveld, featuring a range of natural terrain from steep slopes and rock steps to sand, mud, river crossings and dongas. There are escape routes should you run into any difficulties. Stoney Ridge also offers the option of self-drive GPS routes or a variety of guided trails where there's much to be learned from the gentle coaxing of guide John Rich. And if you don't know how to use that GPS yet, enrol for one of the regular courses. Stoney Ridge is one of the recognised venues for Mitsubishi Xplorer and offers some of the finest 4x4 driving tuition available in South Africa.
    Accommodation:
The simple, rustic bush camp offers comfortable tented accommodation on raised wooden platforms. Tasty and wholesome meals available on request.
    Camping:
There's a campsite on the banks of the Bloukrans River.

    ko÷rdinate: -27.987580, 31.048307

    Route distance:
    4 trails, 60 km | 2-12 hours
    Surrounds:
Set in the scenic on a Private Game Reserve in the Black Umfolozi Valley of northern KZN, between Vryheid and Ulundi, Thangami offers a choice of five off-road trails.
    The trail:
Rather than presenting serious driving challenges, Thangami offers a nature lovers drive that can be undertaken in a day or over a weekend. While recommended for families, it isnĺt soft-roader terrain because there are sections where low range and good ground clearance are necessary. The trails consist of primarily sandy tracks with some interesting mountain climbs and river crossings. With its proximity to the vast Thaka Zulu Reserve, the game viewing and birding is especially rewarding. At the end of the day, relax in healthy hot mineral pools fed by water gushing out of the ground at 41˚ C.
    Accommodation:
Thangami offers resort facilities, with self-catering or B&B, in two, four, five or six-bedded chalets.
    Camping:
Camping and caravan sites available, with full facilities.
    What else:
Thangami Mineral Spa, the adjoining Thaka Zulu Reserve, Blood River Monument, Dingaanstad, Ondini Ethnic Village and Cultural Museum, Ithala Game Reserve and 4x4 trails, Hluhluwe and Umfolozi Game Reserves.
