    HI Amrough

recon of the steering box (Defender/Disco1) is in most cases not successful. This is because of the damage to the hardened surfaces of the two shafts, on which the seals sit.

I had 3 attempts, one of which entailed the re-chroming of the shafts. All three of them were a failure.

I will now have to get a new box from Dover Parts (they are the cheapest for a high quality new box).

    Hi,

I ordered my box from rangies.co.za, free delivery and it was a new original Adwest box for R4900. Cheapest I could find at that stage.

Rangies and Dover basically operate from the same parts bin, even share their electronic payment service :-). Rangies advantage is the second hand parts for (mostly) old Rangies.

I had my D1 steering box done by that oak in springs for 2 k a couple of months ago and no issues so far at all. My box had 600k on it at the time and was done because it leaked so much.

    Hi Guys

the problem is not the workmanship of LL or others. It is the fact that the success rate of overhauling the box is less than 50%.

I am off to Dover after my return from o/seas to get a new steering box.

most are successful but the occasional one does come back.
i normally take the expensive route which entails having the shafts ground down and rebuilt to over size with hard chrome and then ground to spec.
obviously the company that does the engineering work for me also went through a learning curve and we all learn from little mistakes.
sometimes boxes come in with bent shafts or shafts severely damaged by seized bearings and repairs are difficult.
