That is one of the reasons I support the Honorary rangers. They have a "wish list" from sanparks and will use the money to buy specific items for the rangers.
The only person to see the money will be the treasurer of the HRs and that will be an in and out transaction. The HRs are people like me and you who try to make a difference in nature conservation, all have day jobs and are doing it for the cause with no financial benefit at all.

I can personally guarantee that every cent raised in this initiative will go where you want it to go without any skimming off the top for "admin" as my wife happens to be one of the treasurers

Default Rhino snared in Ndumo, KZN

    EZEMVELO KWAZULU-NATAL WILDLIFE
    NEWS ITEM No: 2010 - 09 - 01

    WHITE RHINO SNARED AT NDUMO

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife field rangers in the Ndumo Game Reserve today, Wednesday 01 September 2010, discovered the carcase of an adult white rhino - sex undetermined as yet - in the area of the Reserve west of the Pongola River adjacent to the Mbangweni Corridor and that had recently been invaded for land cultivation purposes by local people.
Ndumo Game Reserve lies on the Mozambique border in the north-western part of Maputaland in KwaZulu-Natal.
The rhino had been caught in a cable snare that seemed to have been deliberately set for big game such as hippo, buffalo or rhino - all of which frequent the area.
    Both horns had been removed.
This brings the total of rhinos killed by poachers in KZN this year to 15.

Rangers should be given the green light to shoot and kill the perps- they clearly have no regard for our wildlife therefore we should have no regard for them. i hope we can come to a solution regarding my medical bills which means we as a community can donate all the collected proceeds to the save a rhino fund.
if anyone ever sees it happening, shoot to kill!!!

oh - another thread on this.

seems they picked up one guy, he's out on stupidly low bail, but I guess he fingered the other two and did a deal.

as I said on that thread - LET THEM ROT.

If they get out - hopefully they are found on a nature reserve sometime soon, 'dehorned' and lying in a pool of blood...

True, you always hold the idea that someone in this line of work, is in it for "the love of it", and I am sure the majority is......but always some exceptions.

Guys, please, I know this can be heartwrenching but I will not allow this thread to degenerate into an emotional list of what to do to the poachers.

The rhino deserve better from their supporters.

It does, and hopefully, they will be made an example of and prosecuted to the fullest extent that the law proivides.

The big problem however is that poaching, or rather, unauthorised hunting & trapping of animals is so widespread and includes many farmers and is not limited to the rhino.

The guy we are going to be helping through the leopard conservation project was offered R10k cash to trap the leopard and hand it over without notifying the authorites.

The task is huge and will only start seeing dividends as more and more people start seeing our animal heritage as more than just "cash cows" and get away from the "personal ownership" issues.
