Of course - you might be up for homicide, but is it justifiable? AFAIK under the new gun laws you can still fire at people that are commiting a crime to prevent the crime from occuring? I'd love to read about THAT!!!
As far as I remember, in basic format, and please correct me if I am wrong, you can only use your firearm in self defence if your life or somebody else's in in emminent danger or if there is a very real possibility that the person you are shooting at will commit further violent crimes.

I'm on your side in this argument but I'm going to be the Devil's Advocate here, remember that after a shooting incident there will be an investigation by people who will have months to work through what you had milliseconds to decide, kind of like how we can watch the replay all afternoon but the referee gets to decide in running play.

that said, it is easy enough to argue that guys from heli's only dart the animal, not kill it, so would it be justifiable to shoot down a heli with the attached risk of killing a person?

What goes up must come down, and bullets fired at high angles tend to have a very long range, there was a guy in hillbrow who test fired his gun out of his flat window and hit a guy watching rugby at ellis Park in his chest!

Another argument is the one against vigilantes, who polices them? Rememebr PAGAD?

I've said it before and I'll say it again now, we should not be looking to be the front line here, we should be offering back office & logistical support, parts such as radios, Gps's, night vision goggles, all weather wear etc to the organisations who are already doing that job out in the field. We should not dilute and blunt the sharp edge, we should be looking to bolster the blade.

I can not agree more Doug, I would like to do unmentionable deeds to the perpetrators of these atrocious deeds and would like to see these sub human trash suffer the wost fate possible but two wrongs do not make a right.
This scourge is at a critical stage and at the rate rhino are being lost the chances are that your kids might not see them in the wild never mind your grand children. At this moment the Honorary Rangers of SANParks are doing a massive drive to try and boost the rangers with equipment to stop this nonsense with items like bullet proof vests, gps, and night vision equipment being high on the priority lists.
I am sure we as a community can and want to help put a stop to this and it is easier than you think. I am a member on the Sanparks forum as well and have started an online auction to help the HRs achieve their goals and I want to invite and ask all of you folks to pop in there and get involved with this drive. We need donations for the auction and bidders to buy the donations and we will welcome any participation. Please folks have a look there and participate, I have shot my mouth off about the folks here, lets show them we care.

See they got some of the poachers, how ever can't help think these are only the guys at the bottom and this poaching business is far more advanced than these guys that got caught..

This requires some political will and a Shoot on Sight Policy. There is a problem of funding. I know a couple of chaps who are willing to train rangers in small unit counter-insurgency operations but this hasnt sat well with the authorities.

Default The real cost of Rhino Poaching.

We all hear & see the reports about rhino poaching, and we all get emotional about it but it always seems a little far from home, something that ticks us off but doesn't effect us.

    Not anymore.

This weekend I was at Bora with the 4x4Community/FOPS workparty and went down to the park's workshops, an area I don't normally get to and this is what the poaching has cost Borakalalo.

These are the skulls of those rhino that have been collected and are not still crime scenes. (all the poaced rhino, are investicated by the forensic guys for all leads, evidence etc) and I was told that there is another collection around the back as well!!!!

This one they cut right through the nasal cavity when stealing the horn. (quite a common occurrunce as they want every little bit of horn.)

    Default Rhino #176 poached

Another rhino was shot in the Imfolozi Game Reserve in KZN which brings the total to 176 animals down. The rhino bull was shot in the head with a single shot in the brain from an AK 47 Assault rifle in the early hours of Wednesday the 18th of August. The horns were surgically removed meaning that they were cleanly cut of from the nose of the animal in a way which can only indicate the work of a professional person who knows what he is doing.

    Exclamation Another Rhino down?

Received a message (passed on to me) from eblockwatch about 2 Rhino been taken in the Vaalwater/Nylstroom area.

Apparently it was a group of 10 guys armed with AK's and the locals are trying to mobilise the farmers in the area.

Cannot find any more info on their website, can anybody confirm?

I heard on Jacaranda about this this morning. Really getting sick of this and wish there is something I can do to catch these criminals.

My little one just loves Rhinos. There is just something mystical about them. I use to take her regularly to see the ones at Rietvlei and they grew on me to and she use to say "dadda kyk, noster..."

They also got poached...This gets my blood boiling!!!!

2 rhinos killed on Limpopo farm

    2010-08-24 09:41

Johannesburg - A gang of about 10 men killed two rhinos on a Limpopo farm before cutting off their horns on Monday afternoon, SABC news reported.

They held up two workers on the farm, between Modimolle and Vaalwater.

"Between eight to 10 suspects, armed, arrived on the farm this afternoon," police spokesperson Ronel Otto told the broadcaster.

"They then overpowered two workers on the farm, a man and a woman in their 40s. They then tied them up and threatened them with firearms and... went to a special enclosure where the rhinos are kept. And they shot and they killed two rhinos and they cut off their horns and fled."

    No arrests have been made.

this is insanity... now they are going after the ones in enclosures. soon it will be the last few in the zoos.

Hunt the ####### down and shoot them.

about time rhino horn was put in the same category as Ivory. there is no legally available rhino horn... outlaw it and make ownership a crime world wide...
