Default Help needed with orphaned African Hoopoe

We have a nest with two African Hoopoes in our garage roof. The two fledgelings have been constantly fed by the adult which has been seen by us. For the last day and a half, the adult is nowhere to be seen and the two babies are making a racket, as they are obviously hungry. I tried to feed then earthworms yesterday, but they retreat into the nest as soon as I come close. They are feathered on their heads and have some body feathers. They can obviously not fledge yet.

Does anyone know where in Gauteng there would be an bird sanctuary / rehab place that could look after these two. If I leave them they will obviously starve to death. Apart from this, their constant calling is making me very aware that they are there

Any help would be appreiated. Regards,

Is there possibly an organisation with the name of CROW (Center for Rehabilitation of Wildlife) in your area; they will definitely assist? You should find them in the telephone directory if they are in your area.

Errol and Thegasman, thanks for the replies. Unfortunately CROW is only in Durban, but I have checked out the Free Me website and this seems the place that can assist. ill give them a call little later. This at least gives me some respite knowing that there is a back up plan

    Pleasure Edwin
I have taken my share of wildlife to Free Me.
Also donate old blankets etc to them.
They are very good with animals.

A friend of mine works with free me, she is always looking after orphaned birds. AFAIK they will even come out to you to collect the birds.

So the little orphans are rescued. We observed the nest from 09h15 till 12h00 today and there was no sign of the adult. I removed the roof tiles and the youngest was in the nest, but the older of the two had moved further ito the roof. Took a while to lift a number of tiles to catch the little bugger

We took them to Free Me, and were asisted by a very capable and informed young lady, Naledi. Simple completion of a form and we were given a reference number so that we can track the progress of our orphans.

At least I can sleep with a clear concious that the little African Hoopoes wont starve to death.

Thanks to all for the leads

Well done! Best story of the day.

Made me forget about being cash strapped, the fuel price going up, shovel yielding workers now getting R105/day etc etc
