    Smile Cure for plastic taste

    Hi

Some time ago, I wanted to know what could be done to get rid of the plastic taste of water kept in a thick-skinned 60l plastic tank. I got many answers, including adding a teaspoon of vanilla essence, and not filling the tank from a plastic hose. The vanilla essence did camouflage the taste, but filling it with a bucket rather than the garden hose, changed nothing.

Now I have found the ultimate cure, it seems: Fill the tank with water and add about 50 ml JIK bleach. Left it overnight like that, drained in the morning, rinsed a bit, then filled with clean tap water from the hose. Left the tank all day long out in the sun, just to get the volatiles out of the plastic and into the water. Great was my surprise, when, by the afternoon, I tasted the water, and there was only the faintest of plastic tastes!

So, I hope the tank is now "cured" and I can at long last start using the system the way it was designed to be.

    My cure is:

Use the water for showering and cleaning your utensils and drink beer

Alternatively make sure you have enough Coke for mix

JIK in the water ! Eish, trying to kill yourself?

Bicarb of soda is much safer. Use a box per 60l.

Isn't Jik and Chlorine just about the same thing? We drink it in our drinking water. I also use it to "Sanitize" just about anything.

Don't drink the JIK... In my opinion by just using it to clean and cure the tank of the plastic smell, followed by a good rinse will kill no one.

You can also use Miltons to clear out the tank.

Miltons := JIK (sodium hypochloride) + table salt.

If you can use Milton to sterilise baby bottels and then rinse and use them, surely you can use it for cleaning the watertank? All that can happen with the little consumption of milton is the killing of bacteria in the gut. The milton also kills the bacteria in the water that gives the water that funny vrot taste. Just make sure you rinse the tank before you fill it up with the drinking water. And if you are worried about the killing of bacteria in the gut, take a good probiotic.

I suppose a cap or two of Miltons diluted in water would also be the best way to prevent algae growth in a water bladder? I bought myself one today and while I think it will work very well for carrying water it doesn't really seem to have a way of drying out the inside...
