    Thumbs up Glen Oakes

We had a nice outing to Glen Oakes last weekend.

Four members of the club (myself, a Fortuner, a Condor, a older Landcruiser) and three guests (two Range Rovers and a SFA Hilux).

Great campsite with hot water and flush toilets. Nice boma and indoor braai area if need be. Camp site is booked exclusively...

We were led on the trail by Charles (the owner)... great guy, very friendly, very knowledgeable.

I am still waiting for photos from the other people and I didn't take that much but to wet your appetites....

We had lots of mud and quite a few recoveries especially in water/mud hole where blue landcruiser is. This was optional of course but the LC, the RRs and the SFA Hilux gave it go. Nobody got out on the other side.

Will post the other photos when I get them.

Definitely a trail I would do again... for the trail and the camp site.

    Talking Glen Oaks

Hi Derren, looks like you guys had a lot of fun there, that is still one of my favourite trails. I chickened out at that mud section though. Did you also get a chance to do the mountain trail, serious black mud at top but most can get through.Cheers Ian. I didnt think much of the pool at the camp site, maybe they will improve it one day.

Yeah lots of fun if you like getting stuck in mud... LOL

There was a fair amount of mud everywhere and after getting through the mud we had to turn around because Charles said it was impassable forward so we came back and that is where the Condor got stuck (pics with the guys on the running boards).

Hmmm... we did go up the mountain side but not really that much mud I would say. We stopped for lunch at the sand pit area and then left there up the mountain for about a couple of hours.

Yeah... the "pool", if you can call it that, is about the only thing that sucks at the camp site. Charles did say he was looking into improving it. I hope he does.

Jeepster, I took that "little obstacle" at the wrong angle, and ther "pretty" nudge bar and bumper, got a little damaged. Was a great outing. For a newcomer in the sport, was a little daunting.

Bly jy het die trip geniet - jammer om van die skade te hoor. Dis nou die perfekte geleentheid vir 'n opgradering na 'n ARB Bumper...

    Default Jeepster

It is the opportune time. Just undecided as to suspension/Bumper first? Also thinking about leaving the "fancy bull bar" off till such time as I replace it with an ARB. Not sure which way to go. Also don't want to overdo the accesories till I am really using the vehicle extensively for 4x4 purposes.

IMHO Glen Oakes is not so great on the "vehicle damage: enjoyment" ratio.

It's a very short and relatively uninteresting trail but with the sting in the tail of the very real possibility of getting vehicle damage in a couple of places.
I wouldn't recommend it for newbies in shiney 4x4's.

I believe they either need to de-tune the bad bits to attract novices or make the rest of the trail more interesting and/or longer to make the threat of vehicle damage worthwhile. My mudflap is still there somewhere.

Spike, It was a rather difficuilt trail, but its grading is 3, 4 if very wet. It was not that wet when we went. The grading should possibly lean more to a 4/5 for standard vehicles. All in all, the standard Fortuner did very well, with a novice at the wheel. Only the bumper & towbar that got in the way occasionaly. There were escape routes at most, if not all obstacles, so it was probably driver error more than vehicle/course. I do however agree, that if you take all the escapes, for the main obstacles the course would be very boring and a longer trail would then be great.

I keep on going back to the 2nd lot of photos just to see if that Landy hasn't fallen over by now - it looks like it was very close to a roll over or is the photo tricking me?

As spectators we think it was close... I thought that if there was a passenger, the passenger would have ended up on the driver's lap and then there would have been enough weight to topple it...
