There are so many lekker sand obstacles that exist there, and every time I keep hoping we find the same as the previous but its not always that easy. The wind also moves the dunes a fair bit I can imagine too, but thats what makes it fun!!

We spent some time playing in the dunes on Sunday (06 Sep)...our first time there...

Awesome place - can't believe we've never been before! Great for learning new skills and testing your (vehicles) ability in the sand. Highly recommended for anyone planning on extended sand driving (like West Coast, Moz, etc.) - play in the sandbox to make sure you know how to handle these conditions comfortably...

Also able to assist a Ford Ranger that got stuck ...good to meet you Ali, hope you enjoyed the rest of your day...

Looks like you had yourself a good jol, tyres look like they were a bit hard.

It was seriously good fun! We went down to 1.1 Bar which worked nicely...the Landy in our group did have a tyre pop off the rim, sufficiently to instantly deflate (quick sharp turns in the sand...aka donuts ) but we quickly pumped it back up and were good to go for the rest of the day...

With BF's on my ranger, anything over 0.5 bar means I get stuck about 100 to 200 meters from the start gate.

Also, maybe to add what we learnt...lots of discussion about HR vs LR, VSC/ASC on/off, Traction control on/off

For the V6 petrols - FJ & Pajero - we found that VSC/ASC should definitely be off (happens automatically when in LR)

LR worked much better but we're also not in the habit of excessive speed when offroad

Traction control (A-Trac in the FJ) helped in my opinion so that was left on

4LR(auto) worked well for most situations but some steeper, longer dunes required 2LR to be locked...and all obstacles needed to be attacked with a fairly heavy right foot...

Good to know...would explain the Ranger we needed to recover - he went down to 0.9 but his BF's seemed hard to me

It seems different tyres deform differently at similar pressures - makes sense if you consider sidewall construction may be different...good idea to learn what works well for your specific tyre based on actual deformation rather than number of Bar...

I'm running AT Scorpions which seem ok at around 0.9 - 1.1 Bar depending on how soft the sand is...I used 0.8 when touring the West Coast but that was summer and the sand was very soft...

    I'
Neat trick I learned at team offroad 4x4 school - 'rather than 0.5 bar for sand', go for 'the distance from rim to ground should decrease by half on sand'
Or you know, that 'half' may be 3/4 or something different for you. The bfg's with their hard sidewalls have to go down much more to reach the same level of deformity as a softer tyre.
But that is why we go test at atlantis, right? To find out what works for you.

Was only my second time there this weekend, and I also learned the heavy right foot trick. Alas, my nudge bar didn't agree with that approach. I even think I saw you guys at one point.

Hi Raven, care if I join you next time with my Prado. Assuming that our MTS systems are the same, I am yet to find the best settings for sand driving.

Hi would like to join as well

Have done Brakkenduine in EC, but are now in Darling.

Our Amarok (M) has done Namaqua Coastal park and we hope to visit it again in the near future, so extra experience and some time behind the wheel for Mrs would be greatly appreciated.

Please send us a note when next you plan a trip
