Today I sorted out the wipers, stopped functioning a week or three ago. The auto electrician said the wiper motor is faulty, so on Friday I bought a new wiper motor. R4600.00 plus V.a.t from Land Rover, but I got one from Landy Parts 4 Africa for R2200 less 10% plus V.a.t.

Itís a dash out job, I found the one spindle seized, making it impossible for the motor to function, so I doubt thereís anything wrong with the motor, but since I had a new motor, I fitted it. With a seized spindle, one would normally replace it, but I managed to free it with Q20.

Wipers working 100% now and while at it, I fitted a Bluetooth radio and new speakers.

Went off-road, nothing too hectic, and this was the result. New shocks fitted end Oct 2020, first time off-roading with them.

Another chap with a D1, also had the same issue: broken TF shock, same wheel.

    TF really are crap

Was that on the rear, did you remove the two cups on the diff the shock goes through as the cups can stop them from moving and then shock snap restricts shock pin movement, maybe that why top area snapped
I use TF for last 15 yrs never snapped on on +2 and +4Ē lift

Do you perhaps have a close-up of the failure? Was it at the eye/ shaft weld?

It seems that the washers will catch onto the shock when flexing. A tapered washer would have prevented it.

My friend with the same failure just messaged me now, and thinks he's found a solution:

"The chromede rod diameter is 16mm , but the thread diameter holding the rod in the top mounting is 12mm. There is a sharp change from the rod diam to the thread, and this transition is the point of failure because of the combined bending and tensile load when the axle is hanging off the shockabsorber.

I am going to rethread the rod to 16mm. The load bearing area goes from 12 squared (144 mm2) to 16sq (256 mm2) .....almost 2 x."

On the back diff where the shock mounts to there are 2 steel cups one on either side you can see it in the pic, most ppl remove them with hammer and chisel, the cups can restrict movement of shock pin
