Open heart surgery on the Landy. Had a clutch juddering and spigot bush noise. When I dumped the oils they were glistening with brass flakes so that means there is big marakas in both the gearbox and transfer box I'll need to get recon boxes

Any advice on who to see about this in Joburg or Pretoria?

LRxreme rebuilt both my gearbox and transfer-case. Very happy with there work. I would get a enlarged transfer-case sump while your at it and maybe consider a 1.2 transfer-case if you don't tow regularly.

    Is the box acting up?
There are brass shims that are used during the assembly of the box. These shims get destroyed during the life of the engine.

I once found quite a lot of it during a seal replacement.

Did some surfing on forums and was told about it.

I've no further evidence about the shims but if the box isn't acting up, be careful of spending money unnecessarily.

The box is working reasonably well. There is a slight whine in 5th and if you touch the gear leaver whilst accelerating there is a rattle.. oh and the oil leak between the transfer and gearbox

With much swearing and brute force, I managed to get all the swollen wheel nuts off and replace with new ones. Unfortunately no one stocks the solid steel ones in ZA, so I had to go with the capped ones:

But one of the front ones is now stuck in the socket and I can't get it out, so will have to replace that with a new one...

where is the best place to get a Gedore 3/4 drive 27mm hexagon socket?

    First removed everything and washed.

    Attachment 570852

Then I started to replace all the seals. I only replaced the needle bearing in the stub, the swivel pin bearings was good as well as the wheel bearings.
    I just greased them.
The stub was 180 degrees wrongly fitted and it looks like the big nut wasn't punched over.
The special tool I made to torque the swivel hub worked perfectly. All bolts was given locktite and torqued.

    Attachment 570853

Filling the swivel hub kept me busy, the trick is to turn the wheel fully to the outside, then it's easy.

One gasket I had to make myself as the one I ordered didn't fit.

I'm in two minds to do the other side, it's not leaking but the little grease and parts fitted wrong makes me think that I might as well do it for peace of mind.

I bought parts for both sides.
And today I did the other side.
Unfortunately I have to replace the hub seal on first side as I figured out I made a mistake.

In Cape Town, here: fowkes.co.za or topfast.

    Stellenbosch/Somerset West: not sure.

That ĺ" drive power bar for wheel nuts is the answer. And get a deep six-point socket. The impact driver ones are perfect.

Who fastened them the previous time. Steel wheels are torqued 100Nm and Wolf 130Nm.

With my powerbar it feels not tight enough but that's what the book recommends.

    the tyre shop.

the owner's manual says 130Nm for alloys, but the workshop manual says 133Nm:

    Road Wheel Nut Torque Specifications
    Wheel type Nm
    Steel wheels 100
    Alloy wheels 130
    Heavy duty wheels 170

Ja, not going to go into the stuff they have do to me.

I insist on a torque wrench being used when I am at a tire shop.

And just to make a point, I bring my own if they can't.

Added boost gauge and rear step to Komba.I made the rear step & tow bar to incorporate corner protectors.Just waiting for the cover plate on the step as the powder coat messed it up.

Hit a low wooden pole hidden in the grass on the way to work.

I am glad for the landy bull bar. Scary thing was this was under 10km/h.

Lucky I have a spare bull bar at home. Will just need to get a new drag link as old one got a bit bent.Attachment 574397Click image for larger version.

Noticed steering drop-arm boot had perished. It requires special tools and/or colorful language to replace. Took it across to Landyworld in George. 1 hour later a replacement kit was fitted, all propshafts and sliders greased, entire suspension checked. (They found a rear sway bar nut that had started to work loose) All done quickly and efficiently for a very reasonable price. If you service your vehicle yourself, it is still a good idea to let the pro’s check it out once in a while.

Then brought it home and replaced the rear sliding window channels. Found a narrow rubber/felt extrusion at Proauto Rubber in George. Under R60 bucks for 2.4m of the stuff and I still have some left. No more rattles.

If this is advertising and not allowed, then my apologies and the moderators should feel free to remove it. But I would like to put it out there when you get great service at a reasonable price as I did at both of these places. If we don’t support the good guys, they will disappear.

The only advertising that is not allowed is when you have a vested interest in the business and you haven't registered as a commercial member.
