Default 3 Owlets left to die

The Owl Rescue Centre saved three orphaned spotted eagle owlets in Chartwell last week.
    14 November 2012

Danielle Murray at the centre said both the parents were shot with a revolver by workers who live on the property where the spotted eagle owls were breeding.
"Fortunately a site manager became aware of this and we were asked to save the owlets," Murray said.
"When spotted eagle owls are nesting, they are very vulnerable to persecution. The men walked straight up to the owls to shoot them. We were told that the owl bodies were then discarded on a rubbish dump on the property.
"Sadly we found a dead barn owl that was also shot and killed by the same men."
The two small orphaned owlets are about four weeks old.
"We found them in a hollow burnt-out tree in a very weak condition after going without food for some days. The female owl was killed three days before, and the male even before that."
Scribner said the babies would soon be placed with a foster owl parent.

Now what harm could those owls have caused to warrant shooting them?

We simply have no respect for life anymore, be it human or animal.

so appalled and disgusted, we seem to have become a society that is intent on murdering and destroying what precious little of what we have left of this country and planet. No wonder Mother nature is getting p$$d off.

Firstly, what I do not understand is that they fired a gun in what appeared to be a built-up area on more than one occasion, and nothing was done about it.

Secondly, the fact that they had guns.

Isn't there a superstitious connotation to owls in a certain section of 'our nation' that can explain this behaviour ?

The despicable savages responsible for killing these beautiful birds do not deserve to be alive and must be held accountable for their actions.

Yes probably but you dont see them shooting small people thinking they are the Tokolosh. This is nothing more than I am stronger than you. Think they need to come visit so I can have the same attitude towards them?

Eish ... Slow down a bit chaps. People do stupid things.

I have a couple of 13-year old boys accross the road from me that regularly shoot all sort of birds with their air guns. People need a bit of educating now and then.

There were farmers poisoning leopards and vultures, and it took quite some time to educate them and to implement alternative strategies.

I agree that it was a horrible thing to do, but let's be sensible and mature about it. Killing people for shooting owls is taking things too far!

I was wondering about that as well, but cannot recall anything. Was also thinking about use as muti, but the birds were simply dumped.

I know that the old Afrikaans folk believed that owls brought news of death, but we were taught that it was very bad luck to kill them or to chace them away.

Seems more like people with itching guns.

I agree that shooting people for killing owls are a bit harsh but lay a charge at the Police for illegal firing of a fire arm let them lose their privilege to have a fire arm, if it is legal if not, let them rot in jail.

As for the youngsters 1 friendly chat with the parent explaining the dangers of firing a pellet in a built up area should be adequate. If not the same applies, go to the cops. Am I harsh? hell no I have a whole collection of pellet guns and know the dangers of them I would hate for one of my family or animals lose an eye due to a reckless youngster.

Having firearms, and I include pellet guns, is a privilege that comes with great responsibility, don't play about with them.

Do you see the irony in this: Some people just can not do enough to save the owls and spare no expenses or effort and some people just walk up to THESE POOR DEFENCESLES BIRDS and shoot them JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN; like we say in Afrikaans: "net vir die lekkerte"

No irony there, Chris. Just plain and simple human nature, and the difference between ignorance and education.

Some people drive their 4x4's in a responsible manner and try and preserve nature, and others indicriminantly destroys nature just for the fun of it. Same thing really.

I just hope that someone has taken the opportunity to educate these chaps a bit.
