    Default Rebellie 4x4 Trail 23/09/2007

I had the priviledge of doing one of the trails on the Rebellie Game Farm just outside Clarens in the Free State last weekend. The trail is packed with obstacles that keep you awake and thinking and I enjoyed it tremendously. I would recommend this trail.

We were two family groups; my friends in a 2004 Disco Series II Td5 and us in our 2003 Pajero DiD LWB. Both cars are bog standard. The Pajero even runs on the same Geolandar "Super-Slip-Non-Grip" GO39s (in off-road conditions, at least) that it left the factory with.

I have to apologize to the Disco fans, because the designated photographer (my brother in law) seems to have focussed on the Paj. Also, we led the way in the Paj, so the pictures show the Paj first at most obstacles, but that is merely a chronological thing. Both cars performed admirably.

The general lie of the land can be seen from these pictures

Despite the very dry conditions there were still two little mud holes close to the river.

    Climbing a steep bank...

...brought us to the picnic/camping spot by the river...

...that features a rustic loo (with door).

Another steep climb up a sandstone bank takes you away from the picnic spot and into the trail proper.

All along the trail there are off camber descents...

    ...rutted climbs...

    ...and more steep descents...

    ...to keep the drivers focussed.

One spot allowed the limits of wheel travel to be explored in a steep descent scenario.

There were plenty of opportunities for the Disco's electronic traction control system to get some exercise.

The trail was concluded with lunch and a cold one in the Golden Gate national park.

It was great, F_D! As I said, I can recommend it heartily. I would love to try other Eastern Free State trails in the (hopefully near) future.

    Gerrit,

Did you not have clearance issues with your Paj? Looked a bit close in some of those shots. Glad you enjoyed the trail!

Yes Eric, I had a few scrapes (running boards and tow bar mainly, but also the rear bumper), but nothing too bad. Line selection is a lot more critical with the Gen 3 Paj than with many other 4wds, though, due to the vehicle configuration. I am currently exploring alternatives to gain some clearance.

Eish Bennie, I was afraid that someone would nail me for my finger trouble (and I had a suspicion that it would be you) . I tried to fix it, but was unable to. Moderators, please help?

The trail costs R150 per vehicle, so is not really that expensive. It could get expensive if you mess up at one of the tricky obstacles and do some real damage to your vehicle, though.

    My pleasure!

(Or would you prefer Rebellie $x$ Trail? )

Many thanks, Eric . Do you have to be a moderator to do it or am I just too dumb?

    Hi Gerrit,

Nope, you're not dumb, it's a Moderator option under "Thread Tools".

Took me a while to find it too...
