Sorry I see it only handles 380nm. Rowan your yank V8 obviously only make 380nm otherwise it would be toast by now

No, apparently its the 380nm that the Chev makes at idle that's gonna brake it

Are you saying a standard R380 can handle more torque than a Chev or Chrysler auto? Are you saying that a standard R380 is better than a LT85 or even an old LT95? If so, think again.

Jakes Rowan has been running a 550nm 6.0 V8 in his 110 with a R380 box for 2 years plus.

As I have said. I will wait my turn and state my case.

But please do explain to me why the R380 is crap and also why the LT85 is better.

The R380 has consistently shown that the average box cannot handle high torque. The LT85 Santana box was its predecessor and a much stronger box. If you have been lucky, good on you.

Gary and I have been into Landy boxes for almost 2 decades. Telling us both we have no clue is insulting.

I was told by a LR workshop supervisor that the R380 box was so called for its ability to sustain 380nm torque. I think a good V8 could exceed that?

Jelo, seeing that your motivation RE the R380 is not forthcoming I'm not going to waste my energy with you. Your bullish forum reputation precedes you but so too your inability to properly debate with sound reason.

I directed an informative question to Gary... You responded with your typical response. When probed your argument lacked any credibility... True to form.

If and when Gary replies, I'll continue this discussion civilly with him. As for engagement with you, I'll leave you to your social media ego trip.

That is correct. The name R380 is derived from the fact that the box is Rover based and is rated at 380nm.

However, myself and numerous others have been running these boxes in competition use and have managed to keep them alive with plenty of power going through them.

Many competitors are using LS Based V8s and more recently M57 powerplantals who all make upwards of 450nm - 600nm driving big wheels and locked axles.

The R380 box's biggest issue related to 5th gear bearing failure. This can largely be attributed to the little amount of oil used in the box. We use 3x methods to help overcome this:

    1) Fit aftermarket gearbox oil cooler - this cools the gearbox oil and adds additional capacity which further helps with cooling.

    2) Rebuild the gearbox using the Ashcroft rebuild kit to ensure that there is no play in the box before fitting them into the vehicles.

    3) Run the best quality Ravenol oil money can buy

We are fortunate to have wonderfully skilled LR indies in CPT in the likes of Rory van Zyl, JP Fourie, Wessel Fourie and Mike Porter who all use their high Power vehicles in competition scenarios and truly understand understand these boxes, their shortcomings and how to overcome them.

Also to be noted is that later R380 boxes made use of heavier duty 5th gear bearings but the oil upgrades are all still worth it as additional insurance considerimg the power we are driving through them.
