    Default Jeep advice needed.

My youngest son has been offered a CJ6 jeep (incomplete) for R4000-00. The body work is original and in good nick. It has it's original front diff, radiator, lights, dash board instruments, seats, canvas canopy, steering and roll bar.
What it needs is the engine, transfer box, gearbox and rear diff. Also on offer is a recon Nissan 2.8 engine and transfer box (not sure what transfer box) also for R4000-00. The present owner was going to fit this engine to the Jeep. Do you Jeep owners think this is a worthwile project him to take over, or pluk hy n lat vir sy eie gat.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorento, if that engine comes complete i.e. fit and start, I'd say go for it. It's always lekker to say "I've built it up to what it is" What does he want to do with the Jeep.

Sakkie, he wants to get into our hobby as well, more trails than overlanding, but as yet cant afford it. He has got endless patience with something like this, (unlike me) and has always been a Jeep fan. The engine is complete and can be started. But what worries me is what gearbox and diff does he get that matches the original front diff, or are these parts freely available?

For "our game" (I like that) you don't get much better than the CJ6.If it's the original front diff it would have the twin U-bolt type yoke. You are going to have to get drive shafts made up due to different lenghts from the original. The shop that makes them for you can fit different ends to fit the different yokes if needed.

Hi Sorento. It is great seeing youngers take an interest and willing to take on a project like this, but it is going to take more than patience, and the one thing that makes them lose interest are FUNDS, and more so when the vehicle is not running. Just my two cents, but it may be better for him fork out more initially, and to look around for a CJ6 that is running and improve on that vehicle in time. That way he gets to enjoy it a little while "building it".

    Agreed, and more so if it's running a V8 . . . . Sakkie, please post a few pictures of your CJ6

    Just for you

    Original chassis,
    302 FordV8,
    600cfm 4Barrel Holley on a hi-rise manifold,
    T18a (granny 1st gear) 4speed manual,
    (she had the original 3speed)
    Dana20 t/case
Dana 30 Front and 44 rear 4.27 ratio
    4way disc brakes
15" 8J galvanised steel feet wearing 265/70 slippers
    ZF Powersteering
All Fibreglass body, the metal bodies just don't last on Toti
NO WEIGHT except for engine and drive train
No difflocks, removed the limited slip rear, was giving problems and spoiling the fun in any case.

This baby goes in 2WD where double cabs have looong time already switched on difflock to help in 4wd. When it rains, stay off the tar in 2WD, she becomes more than just a handfull.

    Back to the original thread

Johann, you said he can get a transfer box with the engine. No mention of a gearbox?

Sorry for not replying sooner, but have been away a few days. Thanks for all the replies. Sakkie, my son when and had a second look at the Jeep and came away a bit worried about the owners attitude, something wasnt adding up. As the miners say, " Skate wena hesitate, better wena los it uit." So as JeepOnly suggested, he will now look for something complete and running and improve as funds allow.
