Default New Swaziland 4x4 Scenic Trail

    Hi guys,
we are a company that specialize in horse trails in Swaziland.
But we have had many requests from tourists(mainly european) for a scenic 4x4 trail. Thus we have decided to start a commercial guided 4x4 trail as well.

Being a 4x4 enthusiast myself i have taken it upon me to lay out a route and to be the guide.

The trail will be through some of the most remote and scenic parts of Swaziland and goes through some protected areas, and prior to me laying out the route some of the roads haven't been used in over 20 years.

The trail varies between grade 2 and 3 when dry but can get quite tricky when it rains and a winch may be required. The full trail is 4 days and 5 nights.

Anyway, before we launch the trail in December we would like 5 vehicles to join us as we drive the first part of the trail which is roughly 120km over two days and roughly follows the old Ngwenya to Matsapha railway line that was de-comissioned in 1980. The idea is to do a practise run and to get some nice photos for marketing. The trail will take place from 15-18 Nov with the driving being done on the 16th and 17th.

We will get together on the Thursday evening at the Malolotja Nature Reserve close to the Oshoek border post. We will camp the night and head off the next morning. On friday we will sleep in chalets in the Mantenga Nature Reserve. The trail then ends at the Ngwempise Wilderness area were we sleep in a cave on the Saturday.

Since this is a practise run there will be no guide fee and everybody wil just be responsible for their own accomodation and park fees and meals.

The camping fee is R80 p.p, the chalets is R750 for a dubble room(E550 for a single room) including breakfast and the Cave at Ngwempisi is R150p.p. Park fees is R50.
Please let me know if you are interested. There is only space for 5 vehicles at this stage (first come first serve)

    Regards
    Pierre

    Hi Offroad Nut,

We have to move camp as it is three differnet reserves.

-We will be camping in the Malolotja Campsite the Thursday Evening (About 20km from oshoek border post). We then pack up and take some old oxwagen trails through the park to Ngwenya Mine were we leave the park.
    - We then follow the old railway line to Mantenga Nature Reserve (About 40km from Ngwenya). There we sleep in chalets.
-The next day we take some old forest roads to Ngwempise Wilderness Area which is only accessable by 4x4 where we sleep in the cave. (About 50 km)
-We then go home on sunday morning.

Please note that Mantenga Reserve is the only place on the trip were there is electricity.

Also note that though this trip is chalenging in some areas it is not an extreme 4x4 trip like the Elands club held last month. The idea is that anybody with basic 4x4 knowledge can have a fun and very scenic drive without damage to their vehicle.
Trust me you'll want to take this extra slow to enjoy the views.

I hope this answers your questions

    Just to clarify:
The cost will be as follows:
    Thursday camping : R80 p.p + R25p.p Park Fees
Friday Chalets : R750 for a double or R550 for a single room (including breakfast).+R25p.p park fees
    Ngwempisi cave : R150 p.p
So for example,if you are 2 people sharing the total will be R1310 for the two.

Everybody is responsible for their own meals (except breakfast on saturday). We will have a lunch stop everyday somewhere scenic.
Please let me know if anything is unclear.

There are spots for three vehicles left.

    Regards
    Pierre

Just for interest sake, what do you expect the "guide fees" would be once this is up and running?

Pierre, would have loved to join in the fun, as we LOVE swaziland. Goodluck with the project and let us know if we can assist or help in future. Nice to see local guys starting up again.

Can you mail me some more info on the trip when it is up and running?

    Hi Franz,

For the trail as mentioned the pricing will be roughly R2100 per couple(including accom.,meals park fees etc.) when we are up and running. I know it is a little pricey compared to other 4x4 trails.
But since we are traveling through some areas that are completely closed to the public, it is only after months of negotiations (and making deals) with the Swaziland National Trust Comission and doing some serious clearing that this trail came to life. We are also only allowed to take a few vehicles at a time. Therefore the trail will be a little more exclusive and will be marketed as such.

    Reynard,
Thanks for your well wishes I will deffinitely give you a shout if i need advise. I'll let you know how it goes.
We plan to do our first proper trip over the weekend of 16 Dec.

    Regards
    Pierre

Okay we are full for the november trip.

On a side note: I made a mistake on the projected pricing by saying its per person but edited it now. That price is per couple.

Thanks for the price update as the price per person did sound a bit steep but yet R2100 per couple sounds very reasonable

I will not recommend taking a trailer. But i will wait and ask the guys going on the recce if they agree and let you know. Maybe i'm too conservative!
