Its a strange story. After the weekend she was just fine. Then on Wednesday she didnt want to start. The starter was reconditioned when I replaced the cluth by XYZ. We took the car back and fixed it. When Johan took the car it had a very bad mis-fire (nothing wrong when we dropped it off)

I took it back and was told the computer indicated am Injector failure. I was also told the turbo requires replacement. Total bill over R20k.

Me being me - I was not happy at all. Took it for a second opinion to ABC. Stood with him when he did the diagnostic test....no injector fault.

    Did a compression test...cyl 1 : 15, all other cyls: 35+.

The above quote was worse case, they are now removing the head and sending it to the engineers for a final inspection.

    Nic something sounds very fishy...

Compression ratio on the td5 is 19.5:1 IIRC
    Should be in your manual.

But what I can remember from std6 PWTK(Plaas Werk Tuig Kundige)
Your combustion ratio is a value that shows your volume per combustion chamber? Something like from largest to smallest capacity or some such.

For you and me it means:

    19.5:1 on the TD5 100%
I guess to about 18:1 would still be acceptable?
    15:1 is rebuild.

Lower is bad, you cannot get higher, and definitely not 35.
Jean, ek dink jy het die bul by die ghoens beet.

Moenie silinder druk met kompressie verhouding verwar nie. Nick se syfers is druk, met 'n eenheid in Kpa, bar, of what ever hulle meter lees. Joune is bloot 'n verhouding van die rus druk tot die kompressie druk (geen eenheid).

    Quote:
There isn't a published value for Td5 compression but it should be 20+ bar per cylinder (usually around 25-30 on a good Td5 engine I think, you get more than the published compression ratio on any engine which I have always assumed due to the compressive heating effect in a diesel). If the compressions are less than 20 bar, or wildly different, then it's probably a scrapyard job. I know a few people who have tried rebuilding cooked Td5s and the majority are never the same again so in that situation I'd cut my losses and find a decent second hand engine.

    Right, ek het hierdie gesteel,
"this however needs to be done by someone with the correct equipment.
if you do a compression test through the glow plugs, you will get a false reading and will miss no5 cylinder."

Ek het nie geweet n TD5 het net 4 glowplugs nie.Sal more "next door" gaan uitvind. As dit so is dan moet hulle die injectors uit haal en daai gate gebruik om die toets te doen.Jean as die head af is kan jy nie n kompressie toets doen nie.

    Nic ook vir ons aandag

A leak-down tester is a measuring instrument used to determine the condition of internal combustion engines by introducing compressed air into the cylinder and measuring the rate at which it leaks out.

Compression testing is a crude form of leak-down testing which also includes effects due to compression ratio, starter/battery condition and other factors. Leak-down testing confines the results to cylinder leakage alone.

Testing is done on an engine which is not running, and normally with the tested cylinder at top dead center, although testing can be done at other points in the compression and power stroke. Pressure is fed into a cylinder via the spark plug hole and the flow, which represents any leakage from the cylinder, is measured.

Leakage is given in wholly arbitrary percentages but these “percentages” do not relate to any actual quantity or real dimension. The meaning of the readings is only relative to other tests done with the same design of tester. Leak-down readings of up to 20% are usually acceptable while greater than that requires a repair. Racing engines would be in the 1-10% range for top performance.

In the United States, FAA specifications[1] state that engines up to 1,000 cu in (16 L) engine displacement require an 0.040 in (1.0 mm) orifice diameter, 0.250 in (6.4 mm) long, 60-degree approach angle. The input pressure is set for 80 psi (550 kPa), and 60 psi (410 kPa) minimum cylinder pressure is the accepted standard.

While the leak-down tester pressurizes the cylinder, the mechanic can listen to various parts to determine where any leak may originate. For example, a leaking exhaust valve will make a hissing noise in the exhaust pipe while a head gasket may cause bubbling in the cooling system.
